Bill,
thanks for the info for FS 612/613 and FS 619. Was looking for that on a previous thread I started. Just a quick question when you get to 283 from FS 609 would you take a left or a right (along your route) to get to the trail head for Wine?
Combining Wine and turkey would make this some fine ride if trail condions warrant.

1. trails that are snow covered tend to be frozen while wet trails tend to be muddy.
I was wet BUT it was from snow coming off the braches and then melting. My bike has very little dirt on it. Measurable snow (from what I have heard) is very rare in the CSRA. I feel there should be exceptions for days like that. SORBA-Woodstock felt the same way and opened Blankets for one (2/13/10) snowday.

rode last night in the yard/driveway while trying to avoid snowballs from my daughters. I got them back ;D First tracks on Bartram today. Rode from Petersburg to Lake Springs. Had to stop numerous times to shake the snow of limbs that were blocking the trail. A few times I got it down the back The trail was snow covered in places, fine in others. The view from the airstrip was nice. All covered with snow with the trees on the farside toped with it also. Only problem I had was my pedals/cleats would ice up and would be hard to click in. On the way back came across two hikers. A lot of fun. have some pics but do not know how to post them.

I moved down to the CSRA in the summer of '06. For most of the time the area was in a draught. I am just wondering if the weather for the last 3-4 months is the norm for this time of year.

Getting tired of the wet conditions (and being sick) and am hoping/planning on doing some pavel rides soon. Like next weekend.
1. I have on one map (and not on another) FS 619 which connects FS 618 to the juction of S-33-138 and FS 617. Is there a rd there? is there signage or a gate?
2.Between FS 613B and FS 612 it looks to be about 1/4 of a mile bush whack. Is there a trail between the two roads? If not is it easy to walk through joining the two roads? maybe tape a trail for future riders?
3. I have noticed (believe on FS 659B or FS 656) trails off of them some gated some not, do these trails lead to private land? can you ride them? Note: these trails are not singletrack more like jeep trails or old logging roads.
4. At the end of FS 656 it looks like a mudding path. Where does that go? Is it private land? Does in connect to 28?

Sent this to seenvic and paul. A little editing is being done. Stole most of it from the NFS and adapted it to FATS. Hopefully I'll be better this weekend to help out, been sick as a dog for the last 10 days. Why Trails are Closed? To help maintain the health of the Forks Area Trail System (FATS) it is closed to all access during wet conditions. Trail conditions are monitored by Sumter National Forest personal and designated SORBA members and is updated at www.sorbacsra.org as soon as conditions permit. Typically, the trail will remain closed for a minimum of 24 hours after a rain event. However in the winter months this will most likely be longer. When possible, the trail status decision is made as soon as possible but common sense should also be used. Q- Can I still hike or run if the trail is closed? A-No. Closed is closed to all traffic. The more we stay off the trail the better it can rebound and we can all get back to fun on the trail. Q- Do you close the it for safety reasons? A- While clay surfaces are extremely slippery when wet, trails close for the health of the trail. This is the most sustainable way to operate trails. However portions of the trail may be wet when the trail is open. Q: Is the trail open during hunting season? A: Besides the first two weeks of deer season and before 10am during the spring turkey season FATS is open. All trail users should be wearing “hunter” orange. Q: The trails were closed, but saw others accessing the trails, what should I do? A: Feel free to approach, in a friendly way, those who are not following the closures. Simply state that closed is closed to all users and that if we all stay off and give the trails a chance to dry up we can all get back to fun on the trails. Traffic during wet conditions creates muddy mixtures on the trail, will slow down the dry time, and create greater maintenance issues. Q: Can you ride/walk/run the forest service roads when the trails are closed? A: Besides when the trails are closed during hunting, yes use the forest service roads. They provide another opportunity to enjoy the forest.

Has anyone thought of writing a flyer on why trails are closed, why they should not ride them when closed etc to place on the windshields of possible "poachers"
just a thought

What would your dream mt bike adventure be?
Mine would be to ride from Lhasa to Katmandu with a detour to Everest Base Camp. Not much in the terms for singetrack but the scenery and culture would be awesome.
