from my hiking background, there are few ways of thinking about overnight trips. One camp are the "ultra-lites" which is all about hiking/backpacking with extremely lite gear. i have heard of people going multi-days with packs less than 15 lbs. however light weight comes with a higher cost. Dedicated backpacker. light weight is good but not the over all factor. multi-day hikes for me I had a 25-35 lbs pack. sometimes heavier. gear is less expensive then lite-weight gear but usally still have to go to a specialty store (AWOL. REI, EMS) The last group would be the cheap-o's or first timers. 9ok I came up with the name) Went out with way to much gear, stuff they would not use etc. most folks do not have dedicated backpacking equipment and use whatever they have. The gear is heavier and less expensive and can find it at Wal-Mart. Nothing wrong with it and it is a great way to find out if you really like being 5, 10, 20 miles out in the woods. Some of this gear is just as good as the dedicated stuff at a fraction of the price. Of course you could blend them all together and be some form of hybrid mutt backpacker? Wait I might fall into this group. One thing I have heard when people have discussed this topic in the hiking communities that I 110% agree with "Hike your own hike" if it works for you who cares. I believe the same could be said about bike camping and in mt biking as a whole "ride your own ride" On a side note: I would really love to see one (or more) dedicated backcountry camp site on Bartram and Keg w/ tent platforms. The more people out on the trails (hikers, runners, bikers or backpackers) the better it is for the outdoor community. If they were close to shore kayakers could use them also.

Does anyone know when they will burn the area? noticed the bridges were racked around and numerous fire breaks were in place today. (3/07) besides the dips trail is dry.
Rode all the way to the end Turkey and than made a loop by going out fs617A taking a left onto fs617, taking a right onto fs619 to the end (went around the gate) and crossing Coon Creek (would be very difficult during high water) continued following the road (looked like the machined it like a fire break) it forked w/ a grassy rd to the left which I took, other was the fire break. ended up on fs 618 took a right and back onto Turkey. nice little 11.6 mile loop.
The section of fs619 after Coon Creek is very rough but the sense of adventure made up for it. Need to take the camera on trips like this.

How I understood from either the article or other source I have read, if a person works 20 hours at YELLOW BIKE PROJECT they can either 1. be given a bike that is already made 2. use the shop and parts around to make a custom bike for themselves.

My impression from the article and other things I have read (FB) is that Yellow Bike Projects mission is to provide bikes to people in need of them and to show them how to maintain their bikes. looks like the bikes that have been donated and are being re-built have seen better times. I did not get the impression it was in the buisness of turning Augusta into a "biking" transportation hub of the south.

There are some problem areas that hold water and a few mud holes. Back in the fall I noticed a few areas that the heavy rains caused some damage (near the 1st bridge) and a few other areas. In the most part the trail tread has stayed hard (IMO)
A few areas that seem not to be draining well are an area near a gravel (closed) road close to the sailing club(?) road, and the areas close to petersburg that were armored. Also the "new" rack and ride" sections of Lake Springs Loop see to be holding water.
Bartram does have a lot of organic material for the trail bed.

Forgive me, I am weak. I rode Brown Wave Sunday. On the upside, I was able to see the longer term consequences of quick & dirty drain cleaning (i.e., narrow channels; many of them mine) versus the longer-lasting method of wider, more bowl-shaped sculpting of the drainage area. Long story short, I need to go back with the correct tools and redeem myself. The problem drainage areas, with narrow cut channels, were still soft and you could already see tire tracks building up the down slope (correct term?) side. Also, saw the scouts out there blazing trees on BW. Excellent job. I was doing the same. BV lead a work party last week and gave us a crash course in the proper method. Very useful.

I stopped by (was heading to Modoc) and talked to Paul in the lot. Bottom of Skinny and GW are still closed. Asked me to check out BR and Tower. Both are dry with just a few damp areas. The two new armoring spots are really nice.

The small "FATS" sticker graphics had symbols for Deep Step, Great Wall, Skinny and Brown Wave. I think I bought mine at Chain Reaction when they first came out a few years ago. do not know if they still have them.
I would pick up a shirt if there was one.

I think it's that time of year. The last few days I have been very congested and sneezing up a storm and my eyes are burning. Just got back from Wally-World getting meds.
