Rode last night and I was surprised at what good shape the trail was in. The grass has pulled back from the trail compared to several weeks ago; the only thick spot is the "meadow" at about 5 miles. There are two places where a log is part-way in the trail, but they'll have to wait for some other trees to fall.

We rode from P to Wash Rd this morning. Trees at 12.1 (fell in the trail, and we can ride along side it); 13.2; 14.9; 16.8; 17.8 (one small tree plus one pine that is partway in the trail but you can get by it). The biggest tree is at 16.8, but is rotten enough that a small saw would be enough. There are two new riders in the first 3 miles. It would be nice to have a DR come in Washington road, go about a mile, and turn around. Otherwise, no other mowing is needed, in my opinion.

Baker Creek is unrideable. You didn't list Mistletoe, which I would try first, but you may need a guide, or at least talk to someone with a map in front of you. Next would be Modoc, Hickory Knob, Wine, Keg, Boyd Pond (you need a guide or good directions the first time), Turkey, Horn, Canal singletrack. You will get lots of opinions. There are no bad / junk trails- they all have interesting features, whether it is a good view or some tricky technical parts.

David K and I cut the tree just past the 18.5 mile marker. There is a non-rider down between Keg Creek and bedrock crossing, but is a relatively easy step over. The small section of road that is part of the trail has had stone added and graded, so watch out for ruts after a hard rain.

Rode Horn yesterday evening- no rain but we heard some thunder. Other than the section 2 mowing mentioned above, the trail is in pretty good shape. Hardly any trees left standing at the bottom of section 3, ridiculous.

f & t- thanks for riding the CSRA trails and Modoc in particular, and for helping to clean the trails. This year has been one of the worst in memory for vegetation taking over the trails, and we have plans to cut Modoc, but..... If you liked Modoc, you will like Mistletoe State Park. It is helpful to have a guide the first time, so post a request or send me a message and we'll show you another gnarly trail.

Modoc is clean except for a few small trees that can be cut with a hand saw; got a few new riders. Long day.

I talked to Philip West on the way home- he and Sherrie cut the tree I left and the root ball stood up to a fair degree. So excellent results but a brutal day. One lesson learned (or reminder)-- we both had a fair number of trees within the first half mile, or mile, that we should have cut during other times. I know that is easier said than done. We also did not clean up the small stuff that can be cut with a hand saw or clippers. Still some litter, though not as bad as some of Bartram I saw.

Mark Y and I cleared this section this morning. My big-boy saw made easy work of the trees (thanks MD). We did not find the 13.0 mile marker. We were on foot so did not cut anywhere beyond this mile section.

That was Banks, the same night I went snorkeling. There will be a controlled burn at Modoc soon and I thought I'd wait until after the burn to cut the tree, since there are always some that fall.

Mark- when you're ready, we can plan a trip. You need your "A" game for this loop!

I try to organize a mountain bike ride Thursday nights, normally start at 6pm, at various trails. We include most of the trails in our rotation. Boyd Pond is the go-to trail in wet weather. Usually a fairly low number of people, and a range of speeds (I am very slow nowadays). Not married to either day of week or time.
For the last 2 summers, we met at Fort Gordon on Tuesdays, about 5:30 pm, for a road ride. If I can't get in Gate 5, that may not happen this coming year.

There are a number of roads between Patriots Park and Grovetown/Harlem/Thomson that are "low traffic", especially on weekend mornings. I think groups meet regularly Saturday morning at the Park. The best choice is Range Road, Fort Gordon, though there are still some sections of "public" traffic. Range Road has a short loop- 15 miles, and a longer loop, about 22 miles, if I recall correctly. The short loop is about 1000' of climbing. When it's over 100 deg this summer, I think I would rather be in the woods than out on the road in full bake mode.

Chain Reaction is once again offering store credit based on 2011 volunteer hours (trail work and National Mountain Bike Patrol). The names/hours have been given to the store- about 1,300 hours total for 79 people!! A lot more people logged hours compared to last year (2010).
The credit will be good now through March 31st. Go get yourself some goodies at a discount!

well, too late for much response, but let us know what you found. Give us some advance warning and we can come up with a guide. Send me a PM when you can ride in the evening- I have a light you can borrow. I think there is a regular weeknight ride with some of the SRS guys. For a weekend morning, oddcouple lives close by.
