Keg was remarkably dry today. A few drains that need cleaning were holding small puddles (primarily 3-4 spots in the first few miles cw) and a few scattered spots along the rest of the trail. What a great day for a ride and no mud or guilt. However, there were many big trees down. I noted 5 that probably need some chainsaw work. Tree #1 was ~2 miles ccw. This is a big boy, about chest high. There is a smaller tree to use as a step when going over ccw, but it is a high jump or crawl to get around this guy when going cw. Tree #2 was ~3.2 miles ccw. It sits above the trail and is a little bouncy, so I don't think it is a good rider. Others can weigh in with their opinions if they eyeball it in person. Tree #3 was ~4.3 miles ccw. This tree is large, solid, but sits at an angle to the trail; could be a rider to that special person. Tree #4 was ~4.4 miles ccw. This guy sits ~45° to, and above, the trail so it would be a tough rider. Tree #5 was ~8.05 miles ccw. If I recall correctly, this big boy is on a curve. There is a smaller tree down on one side and another tree hanging about head height on the other side. There were a few other smaller trees down, but they were all easy riders. The usual creeks had some water but the new rock bridge was sitting high and dry. Seems as though the trail is getting some traffic. I saw a trail runner, a couple with their dog, and a kid with his dog on the trail today. However, it looks as though people (bikers, runners, hikers?) are creating ride-arounds where there are root gardens. Several places where the trail used to go over the roots, now the trail seems to be creeping around the roots.

Oh, and I guess that sweet Cannondale is in all the pictures just for scale.

I forgot to bring my yardstick today. You can't appreciate the size/height of some of those logs without something for, yes, scale.

There are lots of trees down all around the area and I know that several of the sawyers are tied up for the next few weeks so take your time and enjoy those riders

Keg Creek is all clear of downed trees. JT and I cleared trees from the ccw direction, while the Wests cleared trees heading cw. By the time we ran across the Wests JT and I had cut and cleared 25 trees. We also ran into two women on horses Here are a few before/after pics . Two for... . This was a big boy... . . This is one end of a mess that fell along the trail Shout out to Kai and Tracey for stopping to help Tracey standing behind root ball that ripped up the tread JT on the other side of that root ball . . #25 for the day

I talked to Philip West on the way home- he and Sherrie cut the tree I left and the root ball stood up to a fair degree. So excellent results but a brutal day. One lesson learned (or reminder)-- we both had a fair number of trees within the first half mile, or mile, that we should have cut during other times. I know that is easier said than done. We also did not clean up the small stuff that can be cut with a hand saw or clippers. Still some litter, though not as bad as some of Bartram I saw.

In the before/after pics....those are the ones they cut. The riders are in the OP, YMMV. Many thanks for cutting out the big ones. Keg is a great trail but not so much with all that in the way.

KC has been the scene for a number of epic sawing "parties" and this looks like no exception.
Super job to all!

Great work! That was a lot of work...... hope these thunderstorms ease up a bit - we just need the rain not the havoc!

Keg must of been hit hard last night (7/19) with one of those pop up storms last night. Description going c/w. Non-rider near the 18.5 marker (right by a small dip/stream), another by the rock bridge, a limb vine mess a bit further up and one just before the dirt road.
Another about 200ft before you get to the point. Two more between Keg Creek proper and Bed Rock crossing. One more before you make the turn heading up to Boulder Creek. A bunch of riders, a few big on the way out. One non-rider right across from the parking area near the rail road tie bridges.
Could tell that a lot of water flowed down and across the trail in areas with a few areas of standing water. Did a lot of clearing of limbs.
also riding wet roots really keeps you alert.

I rode Keg on Sunday. The trail was in really good shape considering all the rain we had. There was a large poison ivy vine hanging in the trail near the 18.5 mile marker (I left it alone because I didn't have my haze-mat suit with me), there was a tree down just past that going CW. There was a small mess between the 1st creek crossing and the rock bridge. I was able to cut out the small stuff with a hand saw but, I had to leave one tree that can be ridden under. The rest of the trail was pretty clear. A lot of small limbs and twigs on the trail.

David K and I cut the tree just past the 18.5 mile marker. There is a non-rider down between Keg Creek and bedrock crossing, but is a relatively easy step over. The small section of road that is part of the trail has had stone added and graded, so watch out for ruts after a hard rain.

Ride the trail last night (Oct 25) and its perfect Keg, albeit a bit dry. Starting to get leafy. Several nice riders down.
Go ride it!!

JP3 and I rode Keg today with a young couple that was there for the first time (they said they rode FATS and were staying off due to the wet weather- yea!). Only 2 non-riders (about 3.5 and 4.4 miles cw from the parkng lot) and several new riders.
