I like CCW better as well. I rode my son's hardtail yesterday and still liked it. It feels like downhill all the way to the handbuilt section. The first day FATS was open this spring I did my favorite combination of GW and Skinny CCW and thought that was better than Pisgah!! Jon

I presume the FS personnel have authority to ticket/fine people that are riding when the trail is closed? I also presume a big gate to close the parking lot would not help since there is so much FS road to park along, although maybe the out-of-towners would not know where the crossings were.

Send me your email address and I will add you to the list- mine is jtaylor@unimin.com. We have been trying to go out Thursdays at 7pm and we try to alternate trails. We go all year round. Some of us are available other nights as well. We are open for all suggestions. I am fairly slow and my buddies are fairly fast and we regroup often.

The annual passes are available at: USDA 810 Buncombe Street Edgefield, SC 29824
I've been buying passes for Horn Creek/Lick Fork for years- it's too much of a pain to stop and put money in the envelope. Although, most folks have not paid and there has been little enforcement at LF, at least in the past.

I lost my bike computer on Wine last night. If anyone finds it, please email jtaylor@unimin.com or cell 706-726-1501. By the way, there were no new trees down after Tuesday night's wind/rain. thanks Jon Taylor

I would also like to express my thanks to Bill and the other volunteers. That was a blast! I was especially glad to see wheels on Wine and the back side of Turkey.

I would be happy to see someone join our night rides! I usually send out a weekly email to the topica group, if you are signed up either through Sorba or through Augustacycle. If not, send me (jtaylor@unimin.com) your email and I will add it to my list. Send me your cell phone nb. also in case of last-minute changes. We rotate where we ride and usually have a pretty small group. We usually start between 6 and 6:30pm.
Which light did you get?

Happy Birthday! If you worry about getting older, just think of the very few women that have ridden some of the great trails you've been on! Or how many men you've beat at BD!

I have my son's lab mix now that he is in the Navy. We rode some of Bartram last Saturday. That is a good trail to start since it is flat, has a nice surface, and has lots of places to stop and let the dog get a drink. We only did 4 miles. I would never take a dog on the road! I know of some problems dogs have with their pads, so the mileage increase needs to be gradual. I think most dogs will stay with you instinctively, or you could carry a tennis ball....... Maybe you could go out on a short run with a leash.

Any suggestions for a light-weight, always starts, chainsaw. I hate waiting for a workparty when I can get a few hours in the afternoon to take care of a problem.

"Kinda sad"-- I agree and have lamented that fact; but in the long run there seems to be one helluva lot more people ridding now. Eventually that will bleed over to the other trails. We're so spoiled we let the Wildwood trail go, which still aggravates me when I think about it.
OK Bill, how many other trails have you ridden this year? Last night, I'll bet you were going to FATS. Can't believe you have to drive over there. But I guess now that you're another year older...........

There are 4 of us that ride regularly and I post the ride- if you're on the email distribution through Topica. If not, send me your email and I can add you to the list (jtaylor@unimin.com). We normally ride Thursday night about 6-7 pm all year long and ride a different trail each week. I am fairly slow but my buddies are faster. I think Chain Reaction is doing a ride at FATS Wednesday nights at 6:30. If you're worried about being alone in the woods, go to FATS any time, any day, and there will be a crowd. Jon Taylor

I think ORA is Operations Recreation Assoc or maybe Area- owned by SRS in some fashion. There are some baseball fields, a walking trail around the lake, and even an "observatory" (park near it for the bike ride). I have heard this area is to be sold to a developer, but that may be a vicious rumor. ORA is about 5 miles (takes me about 45 min but I am slow) and is a fun trail- very twisty/turny either uphill or down (short grades). Only real technical challenges are a few steep uphill sections, depending on which direction you ride. I would not take a beginner on this trail. This trail is the best wet weather trail in the CSRA because of its sandy base. With the drought, it may have a few spots of ugly sand, but it will still be worth the trip. For your first time there, make sure to take a map due to possible confusion right around the ball fields. Or let me know any weeknights you ride and we (a group I ride with- they're all faster) can meet you.

This is a very nice trail, well maintained, continual twists, turns, and hills. Not a trail to just take it easy on. The best wet weather trail since it is on sand, but not too sandy in dry weather. A little easier ccw, but each way has one spot that is tough. There are no true technical features, like Modoc, but a couple steep spots either way that can be tough. Just about every time I have ridden, there have been other riders.

I would think Mistletoe would be safe, but not sure. I've heard Keg Creek is a popular hunting area. Turkey Creek is known for hunters but Wine Creek is not. Not sure about Modoc. Having said that, in my 6 years of riding a variety of the trails at all times of day and night, I've only seen hunters on Bartram, Hickory Knob, and Turkey.
