mcg2013- Modoc is a great ride and has 15 or 20 "technical points" on the 5.5 mile out and back course. FATS is technical at high speed; lots of fun for me at a conservative speed. Keg Creek has only a few technical points, but has some neat scenery and change of vegetation. You need to ride Baker Creek State Park before it closes for the winter. Your feet will get wet at Mistletoe State park (trail is well worth it). All the trails on the Sorba site have some neat features. As far as helping with trail maintenance, there are some organized work parties with notice posted on this site. However, lots is done by small groups. If you're interested, send me your email address and/or phone nb. (jtaylor@unimin.com). I can often use a buddy, other than my short 4-legged friend, when I cut trees. We can show you how to use a gas-powered hedge trimmer as well... Three people with 2 trimmers can make some serious headway. We have one trail in the area (Wine Creek) that is basically closed due to lack of attention.

Rode Keg Sunday, 11/16. Trail is in good shape, lots of leaves. Only 2 real non-rider trees down. Both streams are the same- first one a walker, the second a rider. The "Big Rock" crossing was dry enough to ride!

The lake loop has 2 trees down; they are easy to get over; otherwise in good shape. I cut 7 trees off the short loop and it is in decent shape; still has lots of small branches down.

Rode the trail Sunday, 10/12, and it was in great shape. There was a fair amount of water in the first stream but the rest of the trail was dry.

Michael Drawdy and I cleared/cut about 10 trees off the lake loop today. The short loop (Turkey Ridge) has 6 trees down but we ran out of time. The lake loop is in pretty good shape.

I have been sending out an email about weekday night rides to those folks that signed up on the Topica-Sorba list. I have forgotten how to sign up for that, hopefully Paul or Angela can re-post the instructions. Anyways, I will copy that message into here to make the offer as broad as possible. We ride a variety of trails. We try to go out for 1.5 to 2 hours, but that's flexible. We're flexible on speed, I am usually the slowest. We regroup every so often to make sure everybody is ok. When I send out the message, I try to report on the trail that we just rode. You don't need a light during the summer. This time of year you need a light for the last half. Pretty soon, you'll need it from the start. I have a spare light I can lend to someone that wants to try out the experience.
This next Wednesday, 9/24, we'll try Keg Creek. Meet at the parking lot just after the bridge on Washington Rd; be ready to leave at 6:30 pm.
Last night Modoc was in very good shape.

Not much challenge in those log piles at Blankets- too nice of a ramp. Don't get me wrong, I like those. The log/notch/rock on Great Wall is cool too, just not challenging. Go ride Lick Fork now for some practice.

The trail is open; I left several riders. The trail could use a DR in many places. If it doesn't get mowed this year, I don't think it will get closed-in like Turkey gets past the whoops. The steep switchback has significant erosion down the middle.

Your question is one gigantic can of worms that I have opened before; see "To cut or not to cut" in the General Question section 9/20/06. Banks and I like lots of trees and some big ones; other people like none. Bartram gets all trees cut; Modoc gets as few as possible. I defer to the trail champion if there is one: Keg=Dale P. FATS=Bill V. Drawdys' have put lots of sweat into Horne Creek. I think Horne Creek is in the middle when it comes to technical ability expectation. First you have to go by the land manager rules. Then it boils down to sawyers' rules- he who has the saw makes the rules. That said, we'll talk about a work day.

The side loops (Lake Springs Trail and Possum Trot) are now clean except for one large tree very close to the LS / PT junction down by the boat ramp area. It is a fairly easy walk-over. I will get it when I get a new chain for the saw, unless somebody claims it first. I did not check the short Rabbit Track trails. I also did some trimming but the side loops could use a better trim.

Rode Keg Creek last night; the trail is clean. We cleaned up several areas. The trees that are down are riders (I promise). We cut a big dead tree by the parking lot that had been dropped right on the trail; looks like someone was worried that it would fall into the road or parking lot. Lots of leaves down, you'd' think it was October.
