Rode Modoc today, 6/15. It is clean to the end. Looks like it is not getting much traffic. The turtles were busy today......

I see at least one every time we are on the trails these days. Here is what the experts say:
Breeding season lasts from May to July. After mating, the female will lay 3-8 eggs. Barring being killed by predators, box turtles can live up to 100 years
For whatever reason these "lady" turtles think the middle of our mountain biking trails is a splendid place to bury eggs.

Our group rode Modoc Friday afternoon, 6/13. 1st time visitors to Modoc, really enjoyed the ride ! We made the mistake of crossing the larger wooden bridge (with handrails), and headed up the hill to the left. Trail disappeared on top of the ridge upon reaching an old overgrown forest road (no need to report the multiple trees down on this short segment - ain't the trail). Re-tracing - realized the switchback before the bridge led to a trail back toward Stevens Creek, we continued our ride. Hill was a nice climb, though :-). Could be a good place for a small sign - but the very visible white blazes were admittedly staring us in the face for the proper direction..... oh well, tourists, you know. Fun !
Dinner discussions at "Little Italy" (McCormick) - 3 in our group thought "ride out" was faster / easier than "ride in" - topic generated laughs and debate that lasted for 2-brews......

Rode Modoc yesterday (7/3) and ha a very fun time. A buch of turles and a family of armidillos. A few trees down but most are rideable w/ only 1 non rider just past the 3.5 marker.
I stopped on what looked like a fire break just past the 5.5 marker. The break had white blazes going to the left but it didn't look like a trail or at least a bike trail. Does the trail go in that direction? I just turned around there.
This is the first time since the burn that I rode and the first to venture the 4 mile bridge. I was suprized at how open some of the sections were.

Good ride last night (7/24)! A few big trees across the trail maybe 4 or 5 but they did not slow the fun down. We turned around @ the fire break.

That is the end of the "trail", as I understand it. However that is the start of a connector route. From there you can ride out & around access Prices Mill Rd, Forest Service roads (619 & then 617) and end up on the Turkey Creek trail. I have not tried this, and don't know much more. Better directions? Mileage? Maybe someone else ...

The trail is now clean; any trees left are riders.

Rode the trail Sunday, 10/12, and it was in great shape. There was a fair amount of water in the first stream but the rest of the trail was dry.

We had the group ride last night @ Modoc. I was surprised how clear the trail was with last week's storms. We hit the first nonrider after the 3 1/2 mile marker. We did not make it any farther due to many reasons, none of which was the trail's fault. Rides are always an experience, even when you have to hike over 3 miles out. We are planning to ride Lick Fork/Horn Creek next Wednesday (11/5) @ 6:30.

I hiked the trail yesterday, trimmed branches, kicked sticks off, and cut a few of the trees. The tread is in good shape considering all the rain we had. A few of the tricky features have changed slightly due to the water erosion.

The big tree near the 2 mile mark is gone. Trail is still in decent shape. Looks like about mid-July for a date to fix the 4 mile bridge.

Rode Modoc yesterday, 10/10, and the trail was in very good shape. One non rider after the 4 mile bridge but is an easy step over. I'm trying to think of something creative to do with it.

Rode Modoc today. A fair amount of deadfall and a few small trees down. My son and I cleared what we could by hand with the daylight we had but there is another 10" or so pine across the trail after the big one @ 4 mile. There are a couple of others that can be handled with a sharp backpack saw. (I didn't have mine today) A couple more trips of a couple of people kicking off the small limbs and branches should suffice if someone can saw the bigger stuff.

Rode Modoc Monday, 12/21, several bad spots. The first half mile is pretty muddy. There are a number of nasty spots throughout. New trees down at 0.5 mile and on the 3 mile hill. I will get those soon. Big issue is the small (broken) bridge about 1.7 mile (but I may be way off) is gone. The banks need to be smoothed down and then it will be ridable. Also, the bridge at 4.5 miles or so is gone. I rode through that OK- the line is on the right side going out. The small creek crossing at the bottom of the short, steep hill is trickier than it had been. The wet area Dustin mentioned in another thread is worse- a tree fell over near that crossing and there is a deep hole where the roots were. Thanks to two guys that showed up to ride when Luke and I did, and they helped me clean up a number of messes. Forgot their names- sorry.

John, We were going to do a night ride on Modoc on Wednesday. Do you think that is wise after what you saw today? Sounds a bit rough around the edges.

It's had two days since I rode it, so probably ok. If you haven't ridden it in a while, I would walk a few more of the tricky spots especially where the bridges are gone.

A group of seven riders from SORBA Cape Fear are here this weekend for Bike Patrol training. They arrived today and wanted to ride FATS so I told them it was closed and gave them directions to Modoc. They cleared off a lot of debris that had collected since the snow of last weekend and enjoyed themselves.
I've already asked them to come back during the Summit so they can patrol with us on FATS.

Rode Modoc this morning, quite a few trees down, but otherwise in pretty decent shape. There were a bunch of hikers and bikers- I was impressed. I got the big tree at 0.5 mile today and will get the others this month hopefully. Anybody want to help, let me know.

Took my first ride on Modoc today. I had read and heard that the trail had some trees down so I took a pruning saw with me. Cleared away about half a dozen logs up to the 4 mile bridge. There is some chainsaw work required for some serious trees. The recent rain had the water crossings up and it was a pretty muddy (fun) ride. Because of my forestry work and broken chain I had to turn around but I will definitely head out again. Apart from the stop/start around the logs and deeper water washouts it was a fun and scenic ride

Talked to the Forest Ranger in charge of burning yesterday, and he has been ready to burn Modoc. Only waiting on the weather - 5 or 6 days w/o rain & with the right winds and she'll be aflame. Theres only a 30% chance of rain Wed. & Thurs. and he's hoping for Thursday. So Modoc may be smoking this weekend .
