Let's go back to the initial start of building the Brown Wave, before it was called the Brown Wave. Riding clockwise, a section was being built right after you cross that first gravel road and until the next gravel road. It has some great downhill areas and dips. Rich was working on it, and that day we heard it referred to as The Dark Side of the Moon--IIRC.

Front page of the Augusta Chronicle, Thursday, May 14, 2009, is a picture of our own: Kim and Drew, and two other guys, are riding down the canal path toward the Canal Trail. Does anyone know who the other two are?
Nice pic!

Yes, she was. Celeste also brought Karen with her--they are the two ladies on the left in the picture. Celeste is also the first to sign up for the Ladies Beginner Skills clinic, and she will be at the next ride! Thanks for taking the time to tell her about the rides. She says she is now hooked!

The clinic will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the Lick Fork Recreation Area. We will work on balance, braking, cornering, and going over small obstacles. The clinic will be limited to 20 participants, so if you want to get on the list, email me at barbara.drawdy@comcast.net.
After the clinic, we will ride the Horn Creek Trail at Lick Fork, and practice some of the skills we have learned. For directions and a map of the trail, go to sorbacsra.org, click on trails, then click on Lick Fork (Horn Creek).

No, these rides are not set for the 3rd Sunday of each month. So far the rides are set up according to which Sunday one of our club's members are free to lead the ride. The ride is set up in advance and posted on the website. I also send out an email to ladies who have attended and have given me their email addresses. If you know some ladies who would like to be included on the emails, have them contact me: barbara.drawdy@comcast.net. We would love to expand our group and are enjoying meeting other lady mountain bikers!!

Word is getting out and the monthly Ladies Ride is growing. Yesterday we rode the Lake Trail (aka Bartram Trail), and had 13 ladies participate. We had 5 new ladies join us. We couldn't resist having Drew take another group shot: Left to right: Karen, Celeste, Jennifer, Barbara, Alice, Julie, Kim, Marsha, Becky, Ann, Candace, Nikki, and Melissa. Once again, a couple of the new ladies had never been on a dirt trail, but were up to the challenge and had a great time. Afterwards, we talked and ate all the goodies!! Hope to see more ladies at our next ride on May 24, 1:00 p.m., at the Petersburg trailhead of the Bartram Trail. We will also have a Ladies Beginner Skills Clinic on June 28. The clinic will be held at the Lick Fork Recreation Area. We will work on balance, braking, cornering, and going over small obstacles. Watch for more information in the near future! The clinic will be limited to 20 participants, so if you want to get on the list, email me at barbara.drawdy@comcast.net.

KanDo is a very active member of our group and has volunteered at work parties and events. In addition, his adventure racing organization complements our MTB club quite well.
Steve, you know we tried to schedule the work party well in advance so that we wouldn't affect your event, and would also help clear the trail for your event. Who would have known that we would have over 4 inches of rain in April and our work party would be flooded out?
Why the 2nd? Key people are not available on the 3rd or the 9th and 10th. We have to have a core group that will commit to ensure the work gets accomplished. As far as safety, we always try to be cognizant of riders and hikers on the trail. We will give your participants the right-of-way and be on the alert for their presence.

At the beginning of the year, our chapter president was required to give SORBA our dates for 2 events. No decisions had been made as to when or what we were going to do, but the dates were submitted for the SORBA calendar. One date was April 5, and the other September 27. The April 5th date was changed to May 16 for the SMC.
We will plan an event (a fun family day) for September 27, and it will most likely be held at FATS. it will probably involve food, riding, and possibly a poker run. It is still in the planning stages, and is on the back burner until after the SMC.

So just how much trail work was accomplished in 2008? I am talking about someone picking up a tool and heading out on a trail to clear it, lop it, build it, repair it, armor it, etc.
How many individuals worked? Well, let me tell you. We had 61 different people work on our trails last year, for a total of 716.5 hours of trail work. Many of them worked on more than one trail. (This does not include volunteers for events).
The work was divided up as follows (total number of volunteers, number of days the trail was worked on, total hours):
Canal Trail: 2 workers, 1 work day, 5 hours.
Turkey Creek: 4 workers, 3 work days, 23 hours.
Horn Creek: 3 workers, 5 work days, 24 hours.
FATS: 43 workers, 11 work days, 244.75 hours
Keg Creek: 4 workers, 5 work days, 51 hours
Hickory Knob: 13 workers, 4 work days, 44 hours
Wine/Turkey Big Mowathon: 13 workers, 1 work day, 78.75 hours
Bartram: 22 workers, 19 work days, 212 hours
Mistletoe: 3 workers, 7 work days, 26 hours
Modoc: 2 workers, 1 work day, 8 hours
These figures do not include people who worked and didn’t turn in a volunteer sheet, nor any work done by the Greenwood crew on the Long Cane Horse Trail.
Much of our trail work is spread out and done without being advertised as an official work party. When work needs done, some members just call each other and get the work done. It is obvious that a lot of work goes on behind the scenes. Nice job SORBA/CSRA!

I am assuming you are referring to FATS. The trails are bi-directional, and it is fun to ride them all in either direction. Ride each loop one way, then try them the other way! The only trail that is directional is the Augusta Canal Trail.

If your wife and her friend are true beginners, I would highly recommend they attend the class. The Ladies Ride does not get into the curriculum that is set up for the class (bike setup, bike repair, bike maintenance, etc.). I'd recommend they attend the class and also come out and ride with other ladies to improve on what they have learned. The class sounds perfect for them and I hope they sign up for it. Kudos to Warren Baptist Church for putting on the class!!!
The next Ladies Ride is April 26, 1:00 p.m. at the Petersburg trailhead of the Bartram Trail (aka Lake Trail). We do have riders of all ability levels, and this is a no-drop ride.

This is a great idea and I applaud Barbara and whomever else for setting this up. I am going to work on getting my wife to go to the next ride. Gals learn better from other gals. Not sure why, but whether it be riding, skiing or whatever....it just works better. I would love to have her join us! I've mentioned riding to her on a couple occasions in the past, and these ladies rides would be perfect! I'm sure you will watch the kids. Bribe her, beg her, do whatever it takes!! I think she would have a great time.

You are welcome! It was a lot of fun, and I am looking forward to the next one.
The next ride will be Sunday, March 22, at 1:00 p.m. at FATS.
If FATS is closed, but other trails are open, are you willing to ride a different trail that day? I was thinking of the Bartram trail, for example.

What a success, and what a blast! For the first Ladies Ride of 2009, we had nine ladies participate. We all took some time before the ride to get acquainted, as we had several new faces. We took off and hit the top of the Deep Step loop. Next up was the upper Skinny, finishing off with the Brown Wave and top of Skinny back to the vehicles. There we ate some cookies, brownies, grapes and drank some PowerAde. Alice and Melissa had to leave early so they are not in the pic, but here's the rest: Milea, Julie, Anne, Becky, Angela, Barbara and Kim. The next Ladies ride is March 22nd at FATS. Hope to see everyone return and some new faces join us.

Oops. Pinchot vs. Philpot. All this pavel is perplexing! Guess we kinda mixed it up, but have been on all kinds of pavel lately, and thoroughly enjoying our rides.

A few months ago, I had mentioned to Paul that we should consider adding a new officer position to our chapter. We need a person who is willing to organize work parties.... At this next meeting, we should discuss this. Do you think it is a good idea? Ted, dgaddis, are either of you interested in the position? Anyone else? I do think this is a good idea. I don't think I'm the guy for the job though, as I have no way of hauling the tools trailer. The civic is good at a lot of things, but not at hauling anything much bigger than a bike rack! Hauling the tool trailer is not necessary. The main goal would be for someone to do the planning. Volunteers can bring the tool trailer. There are several people that have a vehicle that will pull the trailer. I was thinking more along the lines of someone setting a date, time, figuring out what needs done, getting the emails sent (usually done by emailing your message to Angela, and then she broadcasts the message), ensuring enough commitment of volunteers to get the job done, etc. Something along those lines. In the past, trail advocates signed up for the trail of their choice. They committed to riding the trail once a month, and reporting on the condition of the trail. Trail Advocates could report conditions to the person who said "Hey, I'll be in charge of organizing work parties for a year." Angela used to organize work parties 9 out of 12 months (not in December, July, or August). We used to get a lot of people who volunteered, mainly because everyone knew there were monthly work parties.

A few months ago, I had mentioned to Paul that we should consider adding a new officer position to our chapter. We need a person who is willing to organize work parties. Currently, no one is responsible for organizing work parties. Work parties are done when someone calls or emails someone else to come help them. Case in point: A couple months ago Jon Taylor called us and asked us to help him on Turkey. We recruited Russell, and the work got done. At this next meeting, we should discuss this. Do you think it is a good idea? Ted, dgaddis, are either of you interested in the position? Anyone else?

The hunting season doesn't correspond with the wet season. Hunting goes from October through the beginning of January (the rifle season for deer, if I am correct). Our driest months are October and November. This year we just happened to have a wet November, and were more than 4 inches over the average. That doesn't happen too often. Usually it starts raining again sometime in December. If we do close FATS, I think it should be the same time frame as in the past: January - March.
