I wonder if the wheel is sitting crooked in the dropout or something when you put it back in the fork? If you're touching the brake lever w/o a wheel in the fork, the pistons shouldn't be moving. these brakes are lower end Tektro Novelas....mechanical, not hydraulic. after doing some more research online, it seems that there are quite a few people having problems with adjustments on these brakes....there might be a brake upgrade in the near future. i also wondered if the wheel was aligned correctly, and it appears to be from what i can tell. the rotor is trued as far as i can tell. it appears that i am at the adjusting limits after following the instructions for adjustment. not real sure what you mean by "the pistons shouldn't move without a wheel in the fork", shouldn't the pistons move when the lever is pulled regardless of whether the wheel/rotor is present or not? again, i'm new to disc brakes and am trying to learn as i go, but am out of ideas. after researching online, i almost wonder if it has more to do with it being a cheaper model brake than anything else after hearing about problems other people have had, especially with adjustment.

I recently ventured into the world of disc brakes, and while I'm happy overall with them, I seem to be experiencing issues with the front rotor rubbing the calipers after transporting the bike with the front wheel removed.
First I downloaded the owners manual for my model of brakes and adjusted the calipers as per the manual. Didn't fix the problem.
After further research, I found that if you press the brake lever when the wheel is off of the bike, you may push the pistons out of place. After pushing the pistons back in with a tire lever or screwdriver, the rubbing sound goes away, but returns the next time I remove the wheel (and I'm pretty sure I'm not hitting the brake lever accidentally).
I'm going to a LBS in the morning to talk to them and look into getting a spacer, but I was just wondering if anybody might have any input. I almost wonder if this may have something to do with the brakes being brand new and maybe experiencing some sort of break-in period?

Looking for a frame to replace my old Gary Fisher Wahoo 26er that cracked. The old frame was a 19" and I would like something roughly comparable to use as a backup/loaner bike.
Budget for this frame is $100.

29er

Took the new 29er out yesterday to Skinny for the inaugural ride, and was pretty impressed. I found the handling of the 29er to be different, but nothing that I had trouble adapting to. By no means does the 29" wheels replace full suspension in that it smooths out the ride (as I have heard through a couple of sources), but it was easier to roll up and over roots and such. While I don't find the rooty/rocky spot on the top of Skinny hard on a 26er, it was nothing on a 29er. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the gearing compared to my old bike, but this one climbs like an elevator. Very nice. Also noticed that I picked up an average of 2 mph over my old bike (again, possibly because of how it's geared?) and I didn't notice any trouble "getting going" as others have reported. While this particular model came with some lower end components, I'm very impressed overall with its performance. I hope to get out shortly on some of our older trails and see how it performs

+1! Nice trade up indeed. Don't be afraid to lower the bars, you've got a lot of adjustment there which is nice. that picture was taken as soon as I got home....spent last night removing stickers and contemplating upgrades I'll get out a ride it today and start tinkering with some adjustments. Also looking for a cheap 26er frame to put the old components on to make a backup/loaner bike....

well, I broke the frame of my 26er (Gary Fisher Wahoo), and since it was under warranty, I got a credit. Went to the local dealer, and came home with this (I already had the puppy ) 2012 Gary Fisher Collection Marlin 29er. Nothing special, but it should be a good bike for my style of riding for now. I've been thinking about getting a 29er for a while, so I guess I broke my frame at the right time

That's all subjective. Some people ride without any suspension at all and like it just fine, others want 5" or 6" of travel front and rear. It's all personal preference. A lot of people do ride a 29er hardtail and then wonder if they really need/want FS. For a given amount of money, the hardtail will be lighter with a better component spec. There's less maintenance down the road too. But, FS will really smooth out the bumps and let you ride rougher terrain more easily and with less fatigue. Is the FS worth the extra complexity/weight ...that's for everyone to decide for themselves. Pretty much my thoughts. i'll be testing bikes whenever i get the money for it.

seeing as how it'll be a while before I can afford a new bike, I'll probably end up going full suspension. I won't be riding in the mountains a whole lot, but at least when I do go, I'll have that rear suspension if I want it I have heard that f/s on a 29er may be a waste of money, in that the bigger wheels smooth out the ride to the point that f/s is not needed. any thoughts?

my next bike is definitely going to be a 29er. question is, should i spend a few extra bucks and go with a full suspension ride or stick with a hardtail?

noticed a four wheeler has been back out on Skinny. Damage is minimal, and appears to be pretty fresh.

From my untrained eye: a concussion, facial lacerations, and a whole bunch of knots and bruises. Received a phone call from the patient's family today. The patient was admitted to MCG for a few hours, but after test results came back negative, he was released to family members without having to stay the night. Good thing he was wearing a helmet, as it took the brunt of the impact.

Absolutely love Charleston! If they had mountain bike trails, I'd pick up and move there in a heartbeat! It's the perfect mini vacation spot...the wife and I make at least 2-3 trips a year for long weekends and such. I like the history, the wife likes the flowers during spring/summer, and we both love the beach We usually hit downtown, Shem Creek/Mount Pleasant and Sullivan's Island, but we haven't seen any of the plantations yet. Probably save that for our next spring visit. Here are some pics I've taken over the years.... Shem Creek Sunset Again Sullivan's Island Light-only lighthouse in the U.S. with an elevator Ravenel Bridge Ravenel Bridge Sunset Circular Church Fort Sumter from Shem Creek Charleston Fire Dept. Looking into getting a 3-4 man team together. If not, I would like to volunteer for at least part of the event. Hopefully the team works out, this would be my first event of any kind

Maybe all the creeks won't be dry like last weekend! One can hope We got enough rain to overflow our retention pond at work, but 30 minutes after the rain stopped, I walked the trail I built on our part of the power line and it was only damp where standing water was during the rain. Didn't realize how thirsty the ground was.....

Nice pics. I've only ridden Wine once, but really enjoyed it. Especially the rocky sections.
