That d-back sure would have made a nice belt.

With the recent tree clearing and mowing, Turkey is good to go now. Rode Turkey (and Wine) today. Both trails are really in very good condition.

I think the chapter should just order some of each (mens & womens) to make the minimum and to have some on-hand for sale at events.

Modoc is a mess. The first 2.5 miles are OK. After that it turns to crap with all the blow-downs. I lost track trying to keep up with where all the down trees were.

I was nice while it lasted. Now TC is about the worst I've seen it (except for when it is under water). Trees & trash everywhere.

I'm all for it. Now if we can just get Americans to also embrace the European tolerance for B.O.

The worst one is very close to the Hwy 23 end. I think its right after the uphill with the water diverters. This is a large tree top that you have to climb through. Not far after that are two, one is a rider, the other is a large pine that probably should be cut. The rest are scattered throughout and I think could be cleared with a hand saw. Also, the tree that had the notch cut in it is now turned on its side, so it is a little harder to ride.

Modoc needs work. Many trees down & weedy.

Why is this thread titled "2012 Hickory Knob Trail Conditions"? Anyway, there is a large tree that needs a saw about 2.9 mi in from Key Rd.

I'm not sure what's more impressive: that you finished the race or that you can remember so much detail about it. Great report.

After reading DP's email, I thought it would be cool to see if we could get a workparty out to Keg before the end of May to take care of those trees, sort-of in his honor. Any interest?

It was a BIG ride indeed. I skipped the road section between West Dam & Modoc and still logged 70+ miles. Ted S & Nevin put in about 80 miles. A long, hot day on the bike, but this is certainly a new CSRA epic route.

I'm planning to do the 50. I still wouldn't mind getting out a little earlier than the "official" start. I don't know if that would be frowned upon.
Ted's route sounds tough. I would like it better with a shuttle from West Dam to Modoc to skip the road. Then again, I'm not training for the Pisgah 111k.

Last year there were two SAGs - the fist at Lake Springs (about 5 miles in) and the second at Wildwood (about 18 miles). The 50-mile route includes the Keg Creek loop past Wildwood. The "Epic" route discussed above includes an additional route out to Mistletoe Park (plus Lake Springs loop) and back for a total of about 70 miles and is not officially part of the BDR. I rode the 50 last year and they were still serving lunch when we returned.

Turkey Creek was in great shape today after the burn. There is only one rider tree across the trail - all others were apparently cut-out before the burn. There is one short stretch that is closing in with the nettle. Might be able to get by without a major workparty here this year. I regret not having a camera. There was definitely a picture of the month out there with the new vegetation already coming in.

Rode Wine Creek (& Turkey Creek today). WC was in surprisingly good condition. It does want a work party - there are 3-4 non-riders down and the nettle is starting to get up. Still very rideable though.

Had to go up to HKSP to get clear of the morning t-storm last Sunday. Rode some laps of Lakeview loop. 4 trees down - 3 riders, 1 needs to be cut out. Other than that all was good. Perfect trail for SS.
