Please do not ride the trails at FATS this weekend. We had over an inch and a half of rain and some light snow coupled with cold and freezing temperatures. The trails will need a few days to dry out. Thank you.

We are up to 11 confirmed volunteers for the Turkey/Wine Creek Work Party we just need a few more volunteers to be able to get these two trails cleared and ready to go.
Even if you are unable to help, please help us spread the word so we can get this work taken care of and move on to scheduling work parties for Bartram and then FATS! Sign up by emailing sorba.csra@gmail.com

We currently have 6 volunteers signed up for this work party and 2 maybes. If we don't get additional volunteers we will need to change the scope of this work party and not get the intended work done. Please check your schedules and see if you can come out and lend a hand for 3 or 4 hours. Bring a friend!! It would be greatly appreciated! Just let us know you are coming by emailing SORBAcsra

Please do not ride FATS after rain. Recommended time in summer conditions is minimum of 24 hours after rain. In winter, wait time is substantially longer.
Root system is not drawing water from the soil at the same rate and there is much less sun to dry trail. Wait time after rain under our currently very wet conditions is a minimum of 72 hours. We had heavy rain at FATS on Friday and again this morning. The tread is much too wet for riding today.
On Saturday there were many riders on FATS despite very wet conditions. We ask that you as trail users please respect the trails and choose some of the great gravel routes when we're stuck in a rain pattern. Thanks for your support

Not surprisingly the streams around these two trails breached their banks during all the rain at the end of December. Although many of the downed trees have been removed, there are still trees to be cut. In addition the boardwalk at about the 3 1/2 mark on Turkey Creek needs some maintenance and both trails have debris deposited onto the trail in places that needs to be removed. We are looking for about 16 volunteers to help get these trails cleaned up. If you are willing to lend a hand for about 4 hours please contact SORBAcsra to sign up. By signing up we can ensure we have enough safety people for our sawyers as well as enough tools and people to do the other work needed. Thank you!

Wow thanks for all that great work Becky and Nevin, looks like you had your work cut out for you. Looks like Morry was doing a great job supervising. Appreciate the trail report as well. Hopefully things will dry up soon.

The US Army Corps of Engineers closed Bartram Trail on December 31st due to wet weather and trail conditions the trail is currently still closed. In some cases trail is under water and there are reports of one or more bridges being impassable. The USACE has signed and flagged each of the four Bartram Trailheads and requests all trail users to stay off Bartram Trail until further notice.
Thank you for your support.
On New Year's Eve we received permission from the USACE to assess damage along Bartram Trail and there is (at least) one bridge displaced by water (floated upstream and rotated 90°) - about 1 mile west of Petersburg. Beyond the bridge, the trail is under water. We're working with the USACE to get the bridge back to its original location, hopefully before the water goes down. Like some other trails in the CSRA, it will be a while before Bartram is open for business again. On New Year's Day SORBAcsra volunteers went out to reposition the displaced bridge on Bartram trail - three volunteers in kayaks and four on foot. While paddling out to the cove, they came across an orca! They repositioned and tied off the bridge, so it is floating near its original location. However, this bridge won't be functional until after the water level drops and we put it back onto its footers. The Army Corps of Engineers will keep this section of Bartram Trail closed, at least, until the water level goes down and the bridge is determined to be safe to use. Another bridge, approximately 3.8 miles west of Petersburg, is in place but nearly submerged and impassible. Within a mile or so of that bridge, at least 5 sections of trail were under water and impassible. It will be a while before all the bridges are checked and the submerged sections of trail dry out. Reports in that the water level at the lake is beginning to drop some.

Excessive rain in the month of December led to widespread flooding across the southeast. Once the J. Thurmond Dam reached flood level the flood gates on the dam were opened (and still are) and that contributed to flooding downstream. The segment of the canal trail closest to the river has flooded and will likely remain flooded for a while. Stay tuned for updates. Floodgates at the dam open> Flooded section of the canal trail (see boardwalk visible in the photo)> Another section of trail flooded>
