I've thoroughly enjoyed riding my bike this year discovering a lot of interesting features along our trails. Maybe it's because I stop a lot to take a break and drink water. And most of the time while riding or stopping, I see something that reminds me of how lucky we are to enjoy a sport that puts us out in God's creation. (Nature for those who prefer a non-religious name for it) And I began to wonder if anybody else sees some of the cool things I see when they ride, or are they too focused on the trail and what lies ahead that they miss out on what they are riding past. Since I take my camera with me, I usually take some pictures and that led me to this idea...would anybody else be able to identify which trail and where on the trail a particular feature is located? So I'd like to start something and see where it goes. I'll post a picture of something seen along one of our trails and you see if you can identify where it is located. The first person who correctly identifies the location wins a prize! But there is a catch...you have to show up at the next monthly meeting to claim your prize. Deal? First up is this fine feature shown below. The winner gets a free brand new inner tube! Just post your answer in a response to this thread and I'll announce the winner. Good Luck! Be safe!

FATS? Skinny loop? I know there's a feature that looks like that... but the ground isn't worn enough to be on that section. Speaking of riding past cool stuff, I saw 5 trees growing out of a fallen-down tree just yesterday, on Deep Steep. It was on of the coolest things that I have seen in a while.. Five full grown trees that were using another tree as their base. _________________ On second attempt, was it modoc (http://sorbacsra.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=modocinformation&action=display&thread=1199&page=1) ;D

I rode Great Wall and Skinny on Saturday. I think this is somewhere on Skinny trail.

"...would anybody else be able to identify which trail and where on the trail a particular feature is located? Remember...you need to identify which trail and where on the trail! :-) The where can be the name of a trail section, reference to a mile post, and/or an access road. Hint: FATS will never be the correct answer. Names of loops (trails) will only provide half the answer. Thanks for the post about the trees on Deep Step mcg! I'll see if I can find it next time out and get a picture. You guys are doing great! Keep guessing! I think we'll have a winner by the end of the day!

I'm still sticking with MODOC. If I had to guess, I would say that it's around the 5th mile on the way out. I don't remember it being in the beginning. I haven't ridden it in a few months, but I seem to remember that tree. Good thing I have a photographic memory...
lol.
Anyone up for an after work ride tomorrow? On a trail by 5?

Hmmmmm....only two contestants after 96 reads. I either have to make this a lot easier or increase the value of the prize! Okay next prize we have a near new Cannondale Carbon Rush 3Z...just kidding!
MCG is sticking with MODOC and JP says it's Skinny. Of the two, JP is correct in that it is on Skinny Loop. Do you think you know where JP? If so you get the prize!
We'll have another go at another interesting trail feature soon so stay tuned! Let me see if I can find a better prize in the meantime.
Thanks for playing!

It's very close to the start of Pecker Point going CCW.
I knew it was on the Skinny, just couldn't remember where. I rode under it last night, I think.

I was going to ride Skinny after work today to pinpoint the location of the fallen tree, but Bill beat me to it.

Here is the next fine trail feature for you to identify. I thought this one was pretty cool. The opening in this tree is nearly four feet tall! The winner gets a like new Shimano Deore top clamp/bottom pull front derailleur that can be used with 31.8mm or 28.6mm seat tube! Remember, you have to identify the trail it's on and where on that trail in order to win the prize. The where can be made in reference to the name of a trail section, a mileage post, and/or access road. Again, just like the last time, post your answer in a response to this thread and I'll announce the winner. Good Luck! Be safe!

Good guess E but this particular tree is located elsewhere.
Here's a hint...not too long ago, a lot of people rode past this very tree on the same day!
Be safe! JL

For some reason I am thinking SMC... lol Modoc, 2 miles in. Oh yeh, I almost stopped on Deep Steep yesterday, to take a picture, of a group of turtles that were working their way up the trail (away from any water might I add). But, I figured that they wouldn't be there very long so it wouldn't have been a "fair" picture.

John, I'd like you to keep the tube and give it someone who needs it while you are patrolling. I don't need it. I ride mainly tubeless and have about 3 tubes in case I ever need one. I haven't had a flat or needed a tube in over a year. But I love the game you started.

Thanks Bill! I appreciate your consideration and kind words.
This new game is already having a positive effect in that it is getting folks out on the trails looking for interesting features I might use. And that is a benefit to them and their health.
And as a benefit to me and the rest of the Bike Patrol, I think it helps for riders to know the location of various features on trails in the event we might need to use that information to locate someone in distress who may be near one.

My guess on the trail is Turkey Creek. The hills in the background are Turkey Creekish.

Ahhhhhh...hearing from another carbon rush rider! That's a real good guess John!
You got the trail, but you're a bit off on the location.
So if anybody goes out and rides Modoc soon, keep an eye out for this tree. If you're the first to correctly identify its location, the prize is all yours!
Thanks for playing!
