Very nice recap! We have ridden the exact same route from Parson's Mountain Recreation Area, and had to get some help on finding the start of the trail, too. Everything you posted is what we have experienced. Love riding there. We usually park at Fell Hunt Camp, next to the pavilion as it makes a much shorter drive from this area. Glad you enjoyed the trail!!!

For the type of riding you want to do, I definitely recommend Dupont. There are some really beautiful waterfalls there that you can hike to, also. If you decide to go there, call me or email me and I can help you plan a route to ride your bikes. We have ridden Dupont many times. Once you learn the trails, you don't have to stop at every intersection and pull out your map! It is a great place to ride! It has a wide variety of trails from easy riding to some pretty darn steep trails. It is a beautiful place!

We followed a modified version of your "wet weather" route.
Started at Price's Bottom, right on Key, left on 621, then highway 283, FS 609 & 608 to Cyper Hunt Camp, and kept following your route until we got to the intersection at Upper Mill road and 283. A couple weeks ago we scouted out the creek crossing between FS 612 and 613, but figured the water would be high after the rains. So we kept going down Upper Mill Road to Deerfield, to Price's Mill, then back down Key to our vehicles. Got in 28 miles. It was a beautiful day for a ride!

Turkey Creek is one of my favorite trails to ride. You will love it! I hope we have a good turn out.
Too bad the ETT ride tomorrow at Hickory Knob State Park is rained out. You would have enjoyed that trail, too. Will have to get you out on it sometime soon. You have been on Mistletoe, but that is a trail I have never ridden. Also want to get you and other ladies out on Horn Creek.

MOU--Memorandum of Understanding.
The USFS approached main SORBA and wants to develop a Memorandum of Understanding with SORBA. I believe it will cover trail maintenance, along with a plan for future trails--I don't have any details.

There are several technical trail features that I am still working on mastering. I worry that someone is going to come along and "dumb down" that obstacle by removing a root or rock. I would rather see permission for an alternate route to protect the technical feature than have it dumbed down by uneducated riders. I have ridden both Blankets Creek and Ft. Yargo, and like the way they have incorporated "alternate routes" into their trail designs.

I think your "hunter looking people" in orange were Fred and his boy scout troop. We ran across them yesterday on Turkey Creek--they had a camping permit and were located about 1.25 miles into the trail. Their campsite was about 500 feet off the trail, midway between the trail and the creek. I think Fred said there were about 10 of them. When we talked with him and a couple of the boys yesterday, they were wearing orange.
We also rode Wine yesterday! Beautiful day out there--leaves are gorgeous and the weather was perfect.
Agree with your comment on the leaves--they were "deafening." You couldn't hear another rider behind you if you wanted to. Love fall riding!!! ;D

The trees took us by surprise. We looked at each other and said "When did we get enough wind to do this?" Friday morning it was a bit windy, but we rode the trail around noon and there weren't any trees down on that section.

We rode Baker Creek this last Saturday. It turns out that it was the last weekend it was opened as they have now closed the park for the winter. The park opens back up on March 8, 2011. When the USFS closes Lick Fork Recreation area, they open the winter parking lot and allow access to the trail. This is not the case at Baker Creek--no one is allowed in the park to ride the trail while the park is closed.

My understanding is that they will have spurs that run down to the parks from the main trail.

Per their website, the Savannah Valley RR Trail will go from McCormick to Calhoun Falls, and will be 35 miles in length. It will eventually include spurs to connect to Hickory Knob State Park, Baker Creek State Park, and Calhoun Falls State Park.
Interesting.

This probably won't be popular at all but if we did indeed decide to do two events next year why not a smaller Baker's Dozen at Horn Creek - there is a special feeling with that little park that has a great appeal .... those first 3 years were so much fun and everyone loved it riders and volunteers alike. Barbara is right racing down through the campground and hearing the people cheer you on for nearly a solid mile was absolutely awesome. The folks grouping around the start/finish line and grilling out for the volunteers and being able to walk over to section 5 and cheer people up the hill so easily.....all fantastic. It was just amazing. No other venue locally is set up like that one is. Maybe if it was smaller and was kept to mostly local folks it could be managed better if we had rain. We started off with wanting an event for our local folks it just grew into much more. We have more local folks now that haven't done an event like this................maybe it's time! Agreed! If we are looking at Baker Creek versus Horn Creek, the venue at Horn Creek is much better. If you never raced the BD at Horn Creek, you missed a terrific event. You cannot beat the atmosphere of the race. The last couple years we had about 120 racers. With all the different team categories, when the race settled in you could ride a lap with seeing just a few riders--everyone was spread out. When you weren't riding, you could watch the racers go by in 2 areas. People would set up chairs to watch the racers grunt up section 5 and head into 1. If you were the rider, it was great to hear people cheering you on at this point. Then, when you hit the gravel road coming through the campground, you just might have Liz Victor sitting there cheering you on!!! Everybody was part of the race--racers, spectators, and volunteers alike!!! You can't beat it!

I haven't ridden Baker Creek in 5-7 years. I bet many have never ridden it. June, 2009, we had the National Trails Day ride at Baker Creek. I can't remember how many of us rode--8 or 9? When we told Todd Rexrode we were going to ride there, he told us not to. He said HKSP would be a better ride. We rode anyway, and had a great time. The trail does need some work, and any bridge or boardwalk was slippery. After most of us either fell or slid sideways, we all walked them. They would need some hardware cloth. Over the last couple years we have gone in and cut off some large trees. We tend to ride the trail once or twice a year when we camp at HKSP. It is definitely different than any of our other trails, not as flowy, but also has some really fun sections.
