Wow. Didn't know ORAMM was the day after Jerdon. I better hurry up and book my campsite.

Happy to report that the trail is ridable again. Took my newly converted single speed out for a shake down run. Water in a few drainages but nothing major. Spent the ride out mainly clearing debris. Only thing I couldn't clear was a big log that's washed up at mile 2. Two people might be able roll it out of the way. Bridges survived. The boardwalk lost a couple boards and the last bridge lost one plank. Rode non stop on the way back but wasn't easy. I started to feel the effects of the single speed. Also missed my 29" tires.

Is the trail ok to ride as far as wetness? I hope to ride it soon for the first time.

I scouted for deer back in there a few years ago. The gate at the highway was closed during the summer but they opened it in the fall when hunting season came in. Not sure if that's still the case. Some really steep terrain. The road was up-and-down and well maintained. The tract of land goes to the river but the road stops short of it.

So basically a full on flat ground cardio session? What kinda rider classes are there usually?

Is this going to be a "Marathon" type event? Like all day ride? Or will there be something average riders can compete in? I know nothing about mtb races.

The "Big One" on Turkey Creek has been cleared. In fact the trail is clear from end to end. Only a couple small riders here and there. The tread is also in good shape. No mud or water on the whole trail.

Rode Great Wall and Skinny this afternoon (tue). There was more standing water than I thought there would be. Probably 80% of the trail is fine but the other 20% makes the experience unenjoyable. Unless you like getting cold water and gritty dirt all over you and in the components on your bike, I'd wait a couple days to ride these two.

If you have time and looking for more miles you should check out Long Cane trails up near Abbeville. It's about 45 mins north of FATS, straight up hwy 28. The 15 mile inner loop is as good or better than anything in the area. Not technical or super steep, and hardly any jumps. It's just classic flowing cross country mountain biking. As for Modoc, I prefer Turkey creek a couple miles up the road. I'm in the fast=fun stage of riding. Someday I'll get around to working on Modoc's technical challenges. Hope this helps.

In s.c. orange isn't "Required" unless you're hunting. That said, I consider it a necessity during rifle hunting season. I wear an orange vest and a piece of orange flagging tape off the back of my helmet. Last Friday I saw 4 hunters in 7 miles hunting just off the trail at Turkey creek. Who knows how many I didn't see. It was opening weekend so I should've known better. I took the paved road back to the truck instead of riding back by them. Didn't see any hunters last week near FATS. Wasn't a weekend either tho. Enjoy, trails are in great shape.

I think only one person cares if you go ride FATS or Horne creek and its not anybody that works for the USFS or has any other type of authority.

"Poaching"? Really? On OUR own land? Don't use the parking areas. Just park on the side of the road somewhere like the hunters do. The land is not closed just the "Facilities". I think SC Department of Natural Resources handles the law enforcement. At least I've never seen a USFS law officer around here. I might use the trails to do some "wildlife viewing" there tomorrow. ;-)

I'd already thought about how this is the second time this year it's been closed.... Are all recreational activities closed? Just throw an orange vest on and say your scouting for deer.

I like race kings for the rear but not enough bite for me to run em up front. Have a specialized ground control currently up front. Only about 20 miles on it but it seems to do good. I'ma try the conti x-king next up front.
