Hello folks just joined your board to get a little info of the area as me and a few buddies are headed that way Friday the 25th to ride for the weekend. One of my buddy's was told that we were to wear an orange safety vest as it was hunting season there. Is this true? I've checked everywhere and haven't see n any info on this. Thanks for any info that can help. Cant wait to ride this place. Mitch

Bow season started a while back in both SC and GA, rifle season starts on Saturday (19th) in GA, and I think it's already started in SC as well, or will soon. So wear your orange!

Thanks! Much appreciated! Does it have to be a vest or can it be a bright orange shirt?

Thanks! Much appreciated! Does it have to be a vest or can it be a bright orange shirt? As long as it's orange you're good to go, you just want to be seen. I have a handful of hi-vis orange jerseys, so I don't ever wear a vest.

In s.c. orange isn't "Required" unless you're hunting. That said, I consider it a necessity during rifle hunting season. I wear an orange vest and a piece of orange flagging tape off the back of my helmet. Last Friday I saw 4 hunters in 7 miles hunting just off the trail at Turkey creek. Who knows how many I didn't see. It was opening weekend so I should've known better. I took the paved road back to the truck instead of riding back by them. Didn't see any hunters last week near FATS. Wasn't a weekend either tho. Enjoy, trails are in great shape.

I didn't see this posted so at the risk of being redundant - hunters can hunt 7 days a week in Georgia but in South Carolina there is no hunting on public lands on Sundays.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully there wont be many hunters out there this weekend. Is Modoc worth riding? Heard good things just not much info. Thanks

The extra trees (non-riders) have recently been removed from this trail. I personally have always liked this trail a lot because of the diversity of the terrain. Nice challenges along the way to test your skills and three creek crossings - generally not much water in any of them this time of year. Here is a little more info if you haven't already seen it Modoc. Modoc is classic singletrack so if you have spent too much time riding FATS or Bartram you might find you are sharpening up your skills as you ride along while on this trail.

If you have time and looking for more miles you should check out Long Cane trails up near Abbeville. It's about 45 mins north of FATS, straight up hwy 28. The 15 mile inner loop is as good or better than anything in the area. Not technical or super steep, and hardly any jumps. It's just classic flowing cross country mountain biking. As for Modoc, I prefer Turkey creek a couple miles up the road. I'm in the fast=fun stage of riding. Someday I'll get around to working on Modoc's technical challenges. Hope this helps.

Hickory Knob, Mistletoe, the Canal, and inside the boundaries of Wildwood hunting is not allowed. I have always been active outdoors (hiking, biking, trail running, etc) and have never been bothered by hunters. Wearing orange is not required (by law) for non-hunters but IMO, and many others, do so and encourage others to do so for safety and also to show respect to hunters. When it comes own to it, they are out enjoying the outdoors like others that share them with us.
