The scouts (26) installed bike warning signs on PhilPot road and a North Trail Head sign. Also started blazing Brown Wave. Started at the upper crossing on the gravel road. Went CCW and stopped before the BW downhill. We shaved the trees and sprayed a small white dot. The last weekend of Feb. is the next scout workparty. They will paint a white blaze and then paint brown inside the white. The blaze will be brown with a white outline.

The scouts will meet at noon on Sunday at the North Trail Head. I will be there to over-see the work. Anyone can come help, but the scouts are to do the work (this is their eagle project).
Great Wall update - There was 3 of us this morning that worked on the bottom of GW. We went into the trail from the dirt road at the end of the gravel road (I think the gravel road is FS662A). There are 2 orange flags on the right side of the dirt road. We went to the trail and went left. We worked to the 2" orange flag, which is accessed from the same dirt road, just on the left side. Work is needed (there are bricks) where the 2 orange flags on the dirt road on the right. When you get to the trail go right.

The scout project on Sunday has increased in size. It will also include working on Brown Wave. The Scouts will be shaving trees for blaze marks. There will be about 20 people total doing both the signs & shaving the trees.

There is a Scout project to install signs at the North Train Head parking Sunday Feb 7 at noon. I will be assisting with this Scout project.
Brown Wave status - A few weeks ago we worked going CCW from near the first rock garden to the dirt road accessing the end of the gravel road (the cul-da-sac). We cleaned drains and installed bricks. There are a few unused bricks along this section. If you are driving down the gravel road, there is an old flag on your right just before you drive up the hill to the cul-da-sac, where you will find 8 brick.

I am going to try to work on Friday on the Skinny at the 4th power line crossing. We placed bricks on both sides of the power line about a year ago at this location. Paul F.

The local ACOE has approved the wildwood section. We must now get approval from the Savannah District ACOE before we can start work on the Wildwood section.

Aiken County has purchased the ORA property. Aiken County has changed the name to Boyd Pond Park. There new Director of Parks, Recreation and Tourism of Aiken County is Brad Barnes. He can be contacted at (803) 761-2953 mobile (803) 642-7559 office. Brad came to our December meeting and told us Aiken County was going to leave the trail for mountain biking and there may be a possibility of adding more trail in the future.

I have the reference markers. The markers will be installed on carsonite post. We already have the carsonite post. The installation of these are one of the items to be completed for the IMBA Summit.
The installation of these needs to be performed carefully in the respect that each one will be identified by GPS location and by a unique letter, not a number. A number can be confused with a mile marker.
The only holdup to installing these is someone to do the work. I, Bill V, or someone else that knows access locations and has a GPS needs to be part of the work party. SORBA only has one post driver. Therefore the work party will consist of pulling a BOB to the location, installing the post, placing the reference mark, placing a letter and obtaining a GPS location.

FAT Tire Times is always at least 1 month late………I do not have an answer. I too get frustrated with it being late because of the time sensitive activities that are listed.
At the SORBA Board Of Directors meeting, we were told that the Fat Tire Times will only be printed once in 2009. There will be electronic copies and there will be the IMBA / SORBA eNews all during 2009. The reason given for only one hard copy was to reduce cost. Almost $9000 was spent during 2008 for hard copies of the Fat Tire Times.

The SORBA membership applications that were completed at the FATS grand opening in September had been lost until last week. I did not know that they were lost until one of the impacted people inquired. I did not have a list of the people, therefore I did not know who to contact.
I contacted main SORBA and they started looking for the lost applications. I discussed this matter with the SORBA Executive Director and he was very embarrassed. The missing applications were found the day after the SORBA Board of Directors meeting. Please accept my apology for main SORBA for losing the membership applications.
Yes, we did learn a lesson from all this and yes, our chapter, when soliciting memberships, will handle all future membership applications.
If anyone ever has a membership issue, please contact me.

The USFS will close access to Lick Fork Lake camping area during the winter. This means the official bike trail access will also be closed. The USFS is building a new parking area for trail access. I am told it will be on the side of the gravel road near section 2 - 3 crossing. The parking area should be able to hold up to 10 cars and will have an information kiosk. No parking fee will be required when parking in this new location.

The ACOE is adding a new trail from Petersburg trailhead to Wildwood Park. Look across the street from the Petersburg trailhead and you will seen pink flagging tape. The ACOE is looking for volunteers to help build this trail. Contact me or the ACOE if you would like to help.
