Speaking of otters...funny story, we were on our way into work on the towpath last spring and an otter ran across the trail from the river to the canal. Nevin managed to miss it but it ran right into my rear wheel and I crashed. I was more worried about the otter than myself but he made it safely to the water. He was huge! We see them in the canal on average twice a week and they are very curious...especially when I talk to them! ;o) I'm going to start carrying my camera and maybe I'll get a shot of them for POTM.

Yeah, I second that motion. I rarely ride that trail because we are always on the commuter bikes but your work is greatly appreciated. I need to talk Nevin into riding our mtn bikes to work so we can ride with the Wed. night group sometime!

Thanks Julie! You ladies inspire me more than you know. I'm starting to get nervous about the Cloverleaf race. Gotta get out on the road bike soon! See you tomorrow!

LOL, Michael, you were determined to get those pics of me out there weren't you?! You sneaky little booger! Well, you did do a great job taking them and I know my family will appreciate it. I know which pic is the "game face" you were referring to. I was taking advantage of locking out my rear suspension to cross the dam and start climbing. Wish I could have kept that momentum after my tangent! Sometimes I'm such a space cadet!

Oh, I can't forget to thank Michael, too, for the great pics and for sharing his girl with me for this event! Also, I wanted to let everyone know about another race opportunity. Julie (ooliej) and I will be doing a duathlon on 3/17 in Evans and it is a 2 mile run, 10 mile bike, 2 mile run. It is on the road but you can of course use a mtn bike instead: www.active.com/more-sports/evans-ga/marshall-family-y-cloverleaf-duathlon-2012

Thank you for posting such a thorough description of our day, Barbara. I'm going to send this thread out to my family. You are my inspiration and you make me work harder. I am certain that if you owned a kayak and had a put-in in your backyard you would give me a run for my money in that event! After all, that was only your third time in that kayak and the first time you ever paddled 6 miles! Not to mention the wind and white caps on the water. It was an awesome day surrounded by gorgeous scenery and nice folks. I'd like to give a big shout out to Nevin for taking such good care of me all day and to Jack Cunningham who didn't mind being my pace setter during most of my run and who also saved me when I took a wrong turn on the bike and had to backtrack. After that little diversion I lost a lot of steam and killed my bike time but it will teach me to be more alert next time. If anyone out there wants to try kayak/run biathlon, Jack Cunningham puts on a race on Hunting Island that I've heard is great. Here's a link: www.setupevents.com/?fuseaction=event_detail&eventID=2113Thanks for your kind words Angela!

I have become active in Wheel Movement and want to pass along some important information. Both the House and Senate are moving early next week to vote on their transportation bills. Both bills remove dedicated funding for Safe Routes to School, bicycling and walking. If you want more info on how to respond to this you can access the WM FB page even if you are not a FB member. Please see the links below for more info about Wheel Movement's goals: www.facebook.com/WheelMovementwheelmovement.blogspot.com/www.wheelmovementcsra.org/Also, GHSU periodically sponsors ride to work days where we have folks leading rides from the Hill, towpath, and Greeneway. We have another one coming up in May so if anyone is interested, you can check the GHSU FB page for updates (you don't have to have a FB account for this): www.facebook.com/pages/Bike-to-GHSU/205384486159616We are so fortunate to have some of the best cycling in the country (both mtn and road) right here in our backyard. Let's work to ensure it stays this way and gets even better. It's good for the body, the soul and the economy! Ride on!

Yetichick, I have a feeling we'll need to give ourselves multiple options so that we are prepared for any scenario. I'd prefer not changing my shoes if my feet are dry but it will be nice having dry stuff there just in case. Should be a good time!

Thanks for the congrats Heather. I agree with wooglin, it does get easier and once the endorphins kick in you forget about the pain. I'm looking forward to the next ladies' ride and doing some extra miles with you guys like we did last time. Woot woot!

I knew we'd take sh-- from you Heather!! ;D You're just as bad at sandbagging as we are. Oh well, we'll be dragging you out there to compete on our ladies' mtn bike team soon so you may as well get used to that idea.

Thanks Dustin. Even though mtn biking is my favorite sport, I've found that running compliments my riding and helps with endurance and climbing. Plus, it's nice to mix things up a bit...cross training can keep you from getting burned out and running is great when you travel or if the trails are too wet to ride.

Great advice particularly about the dry socks/shoes. Thanks! Yeah, I'm a bit worried about cramping when I get in the kayak but since running is my weakest skill I'll be happy to have it over first. About being cold and miserable, I'm from Ohio so mentally I'm used to that PLUS no sunshine for 2/3 of the year! LOL Anyway, I love a good challenge and what doesn't kill ya makes ya stronger.

To any adventure racers out there, I'd like to recommend a race that is coming up on Feb. 11. It's called the Winter Challenge in Columbia, SC and I know a number of local mtn bikers who have done it either on a team or solo. It consists of a 7 mile trail run, 6 mile paddle and 10 mile mtn bike. I did it on a team a few years ago and it is a blast. Yetichick and I are both competing solo this year and I've heard rumblings that there are some folks looking for a team so if there is any interest "post up" and we will have a cohort there. We also have a spare kayak (not fancy but it floats) if there are any takers. winterchallenge.eventbrite.com/

Thought some of the Fat Tire Foxes might enjoy the news that Barbara (yetichick), Julie (ooliej) and I all "placed" in the Dog-Gone-Cold (or wet I should say) 5k race yesterday. It was so much fun with lots of rain, mud and hounds. We even saw Jon Taylor (jtaylor) out there running with his wife and dogs. I'm posting a pre-race pic of our "team" which includes Michael (azdrawdy) as well as a post race pic of us ladies. Highly recommend this race to anyone who loves to help rescue animals. Fat Tire Foxes Rule! ;D I'd also like to recommend another race that is coming up on Feb. 11. I seem to be a bit impaired at reducing the pics for posting. Here is one of me in the BD this past weekend (awesome event). The other is from my first ride on the Yeti. Thanks for the links Barbara!
