"we have word that there could be as many as 50 - 60 trees down."
WOW - omg, i hope it isnt that bad, this is awful. I am gonna try and hike some on fats this weekend and pull small debris and limbs off the trail and clean up the smaller stuff.
Has anyone else tried to ride at fats last few days?

there is one tree down about 1 mile from the bigrock intersection that uprooted a huge picnic table size block of earth right in the middle of the trail - like a huge baricade. thats going to require a re-route? or maybe someone gets in there with chainsaws and shovels and tries to do surgery on that section. what a mess!
I was sad to see it this way. felt bad man.

I rode tower today, and lost count of how many trees were down, id say a conservative guess is 10-12 at least. it is a MESS. big rock too. I might go hike this trail in the next few days, maybe this weekend, and carry along some cutters or a hand saw, and do the best i can on it. Kick off all the debris and small limbs, etc.. it needs a TON of work, i mean it looks like a tornado went through there. Dont try to ride it, you will be getting off your bike every 2 minutes to climb over trees-

riding the trail when its muddy is definately no good. bad for the trail, bad for your bike, and you cant go as fast -
its my understanding that big rock and tower are almost always much dryer than the lower trails (skinny brown wave g wall etc.) After a heavy rain people should check those trails out first. Even though they are hard as *car honk*
after saturdays ride my bike was completely caked in mud and i had to detail it. cant let my baby sit there dirty

should probably be closed tomorrow though, due to the heavy rain we had this evening.
I rode out there sat. afternoon and in my opinion alot of skinny was almost unrideable and should have been closed, but oh well-
its funny how some sections are dry as dust and the others are sopping wet

I crushed my old time record of this course (80 minutes) today.
72 minutes (about 36 min. both ways) from petersburg trailhead to the west dam parking lot, and back. I stopped once at the restroom area on the road for gel packs for a minute or two.
I think this is a pretty good time, and im proud of it, but apparently im still getting pimp slapped by some other dudes in this thread - how in the name of zeus are you guys doing it in 60-65 minutes - that is straight balls to the wall.
Everyone go try this time trial if you havent, its a great endurance test and the perfect trail for it. nice and smooth and flat. great fun-

Thats another good question-
What do you eat before you ride? How soon? I have been reading that you shouldnt eat anything at ALL 1-2 hours before you ride to give your stomach plenty of time to digest it and convert it to fuel / blood sugars, whatever-
Do you eat a carb heavy meal before you ride, or do you include some protein? Alot of time i eat 6 eggs and eat a cup of cheerios and a bannana in the car on the way to the trails. I tend to eat a bananna about an hour into the ride too.
I have tried those hammer gels and they do give you a little kick. Kinda pricey though, but such is life-

Lets start a discussion. I didnt search for a thread already on this because im lazy.
What do the locals think about the huge myriad of sports products and specifically cycling supplements . . . sports beans, cytomax, accelrade, accellgel, the list is long . . .. choose your favorite.
Is it really worth the $ ? What is the difference to you between a 2 dollar pack of acell gel and 4-5 fig newtons (25 cents).
Whats the difference to you between cytomax and cheap-o gatorade?
I have been experimenting lately with just eating common food on the trail, and skipping the trips to the sporting goods store for the rip off sports products - and havent really missed it, and havent really been able to tell the difference to be honest.
I stop and eat a bannana and maybe some peanut butter (30 cents) and feel just about the same i think -
I really think alot of it is all in your head and brillant marketing and packageing. (yeh sure - lance armstrong is drinking michelobs every night between rides, etc... )
Please discuss.

I rode monday afternoon, i think around 3 to 5 ish, and was riding skinny clockwise. I rode with another group of 3 people i met on the trail, 1 guy and 2 girls, anyways... as we got to within earshot or maybe .5 miles of the parking lot (where the insection of greatwall and connector is) we were all amazed at how much gunfire we heard. At first it just one or two, but then 4-5 and 15-20 gunshots, like a full on shooting gallery. They were doing it in a clearing that is literally 20 paces fromt the trail. as we approached we called out "Hold your fire!!" and they got in a white jeep with beige top and sped off and left- If you know who that is - please pass it along to them that they are inconsiderate retards who need to find somewhere else to shoot their 22s. Its OBVIOUSLY a walking / hiking / biking trail - and i doubt anyone wants to ride next to a firing squad.

rode great wall the other day, and i must agree - this trail always hits the spot!
I stopped one day on it and put some bricks down in a muddy bowl area - its about a few hundred feet before the tight switchback area going through the small pines. There are a lot of bricks left in that area and several other spots could use some armoring.
This trail is consistently my favorite out there. I love it!

Have you guys noticed this ? The Fats parking lot, and the trailhead, and the trails (especially the trails) are trash free, but all the spots where the hunters park their trucks on the side of the road on woodlawn are littered with trash. beer cans, beer boxes, fast food wrappers etc. maybe its just a random coincidence though - Or what would make even more sense is that if they are parked along a main road, all of that trash could be thrown out of vehicles/blow out of trucks that are driving down the road. Neither of which are hunters or bikers. Bottom line whether you are a hunter, a biker, a preacher, a doctor, or insert whatever you want.....some people don't care and some people do. The jerks and aholes aren't category specific. Actually, i have noticed that nearly all cyclists, and i mean almost al,l 99.999%, have a very noticeable respect and care for the trails and the woods. The trails are a very special place to them, and i think it is reflected in how protective people are of them and the surrounding areas. They are kept clean and people jump through all kinds of hoops to try and preserve it and keep it natural. maybe we are too busy biking to stop and litter. My point was, that mountainbikers as a whole, have a notably higher level of respect for the environment and nature, than the typical camper or passerby, etc.. I have been thinking about some of my jackass posts on this forum in the past months or so - and , i am really going to try and reform my attitude a bit this year. I want to try and open up more to the sport, and to gain a higher connection and sense of appreciation for nature and the outdoors. I want to try and get out there and give back some of my time and work on the trails some and be more a part of the maintenance in some way. Something so great and so fun deserves giving back a bit. If people didnt do that in the first place. . . then it wouldtn even be there. amirite?
