Interested in riding 63 miles on your mountain bike?
Here's what I got.....
The Dark Star route. Sometime in Jan 08. $25 non-manditory donation to SORBA (towards FATS phase 3).
You get a marked course, map, directions, and THE FOOD AND DRINKS THAT YOU BRING will be put in two locations for you, if you donate. If you don't donate, you can still ride. We just won't give you a map or haul your food to the feed stops for you.
It starts and finishes at Lick Fork. It covers all of Horn Creek, Wine, Turkey and Modoc. It is about 63 miles total.
Just call it base training.
If interested, post here. I'd love to have 20 people and raise $500 for FATS 3.

As long as it is NOT the weekend of the Thomson event, both of us are in. One hundred dollars sounds about right for the two of us (that's FATS mathematics I am using) ... Michael

I've been kinda bummed that adventure racing season is over, though my body is relieved. This sounds ridiculously long, painful, and stupid. I'm in.
I'm too lazy to look at a map, so I'm going to ask...are these connected in some way or will we ride/drive/ride/drive etc?

there's no way I'd do this unless there's some prize that's worth 63 miles of pedaling, sweating, and the sore ass that is sure to ensue....like a SORBA waterbottle, or a t-shirt, or a new pic to put on myspace.

We need to avoid the Thompson weekend and the Snake Creek Gap TT series.
I was thinking we may want to make it a test run of the first half of a proposed hundred mile route that goes from Lick Fork to FATS, via Wine, Turkey and Modoc.
We would just end the ride at Modoc. That would make the route about 50 miles. 24 miles of trail, 15 miles of gravel and 11 miles of pavement. It would cut out the long pavement section from Modoc to Lick Fork. Wouldn't be the Dark Star Loop, but would be a big ride for me these days.
But, we'd have to work out a shuttle back to Lick Fork.
FYI, the hundred mile route woud be to ride on down to FATS and do all six loops when they are completed. I think the numbers are 59 miles of singletrack, 16 miles of gravel and 25 miles of pavement. And, Driftwood that is all on the bike no ride/drive. Except the shuttle at the end.

Snake Creek is Jan 5, Thomson is Jan 19. I've got Jan 26-27 free, so if it falls on that weekend I'll definitely be there. For reference, SORBA's main calendar is here. Edit: Anybody checked these trails lately for down trees, etc?

Once a date is nailed down, post this on the main SORBA forum (may have been done already...). There'd probably be some out of towners who would want to do this too.

Probably Jan 27th. I'll need the 26th to get it all marked and lined up.

Post the route (or email it to me) and we'll try to get it all cleared for the ride. HC will get cleared this weekend. The last time we all rode Modoc it was sweet. Haven't heard much good about Turkey/Wine recently...
I'd like to see this get pushed pretty high for $$$$ raising. The SO and I aren't against sweat equity. Plus, I hear oddcouple is getting a new Husky chainsaw and we need to get it broken in!

Modoc has a tree down about 1.75 miles in. It's about 2' in diameter. Other than that I know it's clear to at least the 3.5 mile marker, not sure after that, that's as far as we rode Sat. morning.
I wont be able to do anything this weekend, but after that I'll be in town every weekend till the weekend before Christmas Eve. I'm more than willing to help clear the trails. Just let me know when and where.

You listed all the trails in this ride in your post about sweat equity and a new Husky saw.
I'd say Wine Creek and Turkey Creek are the ones most in need.
Part of the reason for this ride at this time of year is to put alot of people on these trails at a time that the vegetation is not growing and is getting weaker. 20+ riders going thru the vegetation will knock alot of it down. Of course downed trees are another matter.
How is the Jan 27 date? It is a Sunday and it gives out of towners Saturday to come over and perhaps ride FATS and it gives us Saturday to get the gig set up.

Also, I put a feeler up on another forum and got some nibbles. If they really get on board you could get 10 people from that one group.

BOD. A bunch of disenchanted SORBA-ites. Or more technically a Bunch Of Dorks. They race Baker's Dozen regularly. I showed them FATS last summer and I think we had about a 15 rider turnout.

This sounds like fun! As long as I don't have to travel for work I'll join in. Also I can take Wine this weekend and clean it up. I'm not chainsaw certified but I didn't run across anything in my previous cleanings that I couldn't handle with an axe or my hand saw. If I do I'll let you know. If that one bridge near the end is still in bad shape I would be willing to meet with someone there and fix it. I've scoped it out and think it could be pulled back into place with a come-a-long. I've got the equipment but I don't know the regs and realize that bridges usually need some type of engineer to oversee the process. Let me know and I'll be glad to help out with it in any way I can.
