Trails?

Are there "trails" adjacent to the Greenway? I've seen people coming out of the woods on what appear to be trails but I've never been able to check it out because I'm always on my road bike on the Greenway.

I have seen some well done ramps with logs and dirt. The dirt ones are the best but the dirt has to come from somewhere and be packed down properly. The problem with both of these methods is that they take many hours when the problem can be fixed in less than a minute with a chainsaw.

I've heard pepper spray works on naked runners.

About a month ago I was riding Deep Step with my two sons (ages 8 and 6) in the afternoon and ran into a pack of dogs at the bottom of the hill right after crossing the road riding CCW. My 8 yr old was riding in front and I heard lots of barking. When my 6 yr old and I caught up to him he was stopped in the trai surrounded by the dogs. These dogs were VERY aggressive and were not backing down. I always carry pepper spray (and a big knife and know how to use it) so I got the pepper spray ready and started moving forward yelling at the dogs. I instructed my two boys to slowly walk their bikes on down the trail while I dealt with the dogs. The dogs were almost witin touching distance at this point and were barking and moving in. I was walking toward the dogs and yelling at them and they still were not backing down. I finally picked up a couple of rocks and started throwing them at the dogs. It wasn't until I actually hit one of them that they started slowly backing off and finally went into the woods. They never ran away or acted scared. All the dogs barking were solid black and looked like they had not fully matured. There was a larger dog that looked like possibly the mother (it had a collar on) and was standing farther away and not barking. I meant to post this right after it happened but forgot about it until I read the other posts. I've found pepper spray to be an effective counter against dogs and have used it on domestic dogs that have chased me while running and road biking. Most of the bike shops sell it as well as the gun stores. It works on people too

Does anyone know the condition of FATS after all that rain. I'm suspecting that it would be pretty soggy today. A bunch of guys that I work with were planning on riding it today and I thought I'd let them know if it was closed or just not a good idea to ride it. If it is not in riding shape then what is a good alternative?

This sounds like fun! As long as I don't have to travel for work I'll join in. Also I can take Wine this weekend and clean it up. I'm not chainsaw certified but I didn't run across anything in my previous cleanings that I couldn't handle with an axe or my hand saw. If I do I'll let you know. If that one bridge near the end is still in bad shape I would be willing to meet with someone there and fix it. I've scoped it out and think it could be pulled back into place with a come-a-long. I've got the equipment but I don't know the regs and realize that bridges usually need some type of engineer to oversee the process. Let me know and I'll be glad to help out with it in any way I can.

I would like to do a long ride at FATS tomorrow around 4 pm if anyone is interested in joining me. I use to ride by myself until I woke up in the hospital about 6 months ago when I was playing at the BMX track. I now have a deal with my wife not to ride by myself anymore. I live less than 10 minutes from FATS and can usually be there around 4 or 4:30 on most weekdays. I also like night riding. Weekends I usually ride with my family, but I would like to get some long rides in during the week. My email address is laramiebrown@hotmail.com

does it have to be ascenders or is prusik cord allowed? You can use webbing or prusik cord and tie prusik knots. Prusik cord is really cheap and AWOL sells it. You could probably buy all that you need for two people for less than $10. You need six feet for each loop. A total of twelve feet per person. I would be glad to meet with you and show you how to use it. Send me an email if you are interested. laramiebrown@hotmail.com . You can use webbing as well, but I like prusik cord better. I have taught both of my boys how to prusik and they caught on quickly (age 7 and 8). I could probably offer a few tips for adventure racing as well. Here is a link on how to tie the knots: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prusik

There was no way I was going to spend $250-$500 for a light (and I knew anything cheaper would not be good enough) without at least trying to build my own first. After great amounts of research this is the website that I got the basics from. www.morcmtb.org/morcpages/howto/lights1.htmThe ones I have built (in my opinion) are way better than the ones on the website. I have made three (gave one away to a friend in Asheville) and have two that work really awesome. If you ever want more info or want to go for a night ride to check them out send me an email. laramiebrown@hotmail.com The most expensive one I made cost about $55 and most of the cost was in the batteries and charger. The only failure I've had was the toggle switch so make sure to get a beefy one if you decide to build. I will be happy to provide more info on request.
