(Mar 29/9am) FATS Burn Update!
We have been advised that weather conditions look favorable for a burn tomorrow, Wednesday, March 30th. Again, things can change if conditions are not favorable for a burn.
The gates at FATS will be closed later tonight and will be reopened once the burn is complete and the trails have checked for any hazard trees.
The north FATS trailhead and trails will remain open! Please help spread the word. Thank you.

FATS Update - Skinny Trail! Through a collaborative effort between the US Forest Service Long Cane Ranger District and SORBAcsra, we are pleased to announce the award of a Great American Outdoors Act project to Benchmark Trails, Greenville, SC. The focus of this project is to rehab the Skinny Trail at the Forks Area Trail System (FATS). The project is scheduled to begin within the next few days and is anticipated, if there are not significant delays due to weather, etc, to be completed in approximately 3 months. Parts of the Skinny Trail at FATS may be temporarily closed during this extensive rehab project. Thank you for your patience and support. We will provide updates on the progress from time to time!

(April 1/8:30am) FATS Burn Update! The US Forest Service reported a successful burn on the south trails at FATS.
The trails will be checked this morning for hazard trees. In this case a hazard tree is a tree that has a structural defect that makes it likely to fail in whole or in part as a result of the burn. Often these are standing but dead trees whose lower trunks burned.
If no hazard trees are found near the trails during inspection, the trails will probably be reopened later today even if there are some trees down on the trails.
Stay tuned for updates!

(Apr 1/8:30pm) FATS Update!
The south trails and the south trailhead parking lot are open!
Despite the rain on Thursday morning there are still smoldering logs, stumps, etc. Be particularly aware if you are allergic to or bothered by smoke.
There still may be trees down across the trail and trees that might present a hazard so be aware when you are out using the trails in the burn area. Feel free to reach out to us at sorba.csra@gmail.com to report anything that might need to be addressed.
There will still be mucky/wet areas as there was approximately an inch of rain on Thursday morning. Please help keep the singletrack single and stay on the trail. Thank you!

FATS Closure Update>
(Apr 7/8:30am) FATS remains under official closure by the US Forest Service with recorded rain in the area at 5 inches over the past 2 days.
Other SORBAcsra maintained trails in the area will also need time to dry out. Many of these trails have sections under water impacted by Thurmond Lake over full pool and Stevens Creek 6 feet over flood stage.
Please select other places to ride over the next few days ie North Augusta Greeneway, Evans bike path, Euchee Creek bike path, gravel roads, paved roads, etc. until things have a chance to dry out. We will share information as it comes in from our Trail Champions about the outlying trails.
Please share this information with other trail users. Please help protect these resources!
Stay tuned for updates.
Thank you!

FATS Update!
System rolled through dropping just over a quarter of an inch of rain. Since trails still had wet areas from last rain need to give it 24 hours to dry out.
HEADS UP> the professional trail builders have started their work on Skinny. Once the tread is disturbed, as they begin their rehab, it is very sensitive to any moisture. Sections have been taped off, please DO NOT access these areas of the trail on foot or bike until they are reopened. Please share this information!!

FATS Update!
FATS (south trails) is under official closure by the US Forest Service. The north trails (Big Rock and Tower) will remain open.
As previously mentioned we have a GAOA project underway to rehab the Skinny Trail at FATS. The trail builders just completed the large intersection at upper Skinny, lower Skinny and Great Wall before the rain today. Right after the rain both foot traffic and wheels were on the trail. This left imprints/grooves in the newly worked tread. More rain is predicted tomorrow and Monday.
This section of trail is a high traffic area leading to into Skinny, Brown Wave and Great Wall so the trail will remain closed for a few days until this newly worked section hardens up.
Stay tuned for updates and please respect this closure. Every dollar needs to go to the rehab of the Skinny Trail not to reworking the rehabbed areas.
Thank you! Please help spread the word.

(May 9/11:30pm) Heads Up>Skinny Trail Update!
All of the Skinny Trail is currently closed!
Lower Skinny needs to firm up/harden before it is used and Benchmark Trails is now working on upper Skinny. We will provide updates as they become available.
To access the Brown Wave trail you can access USFS gravel road 662 right from the main FATS parking lot. Access the road to the left of the pit toilet near the red gate. Turn right on the gravel road and stay to the left as you travel down the road to the power line. Turn to the right at the power line staying to the right of the power line poles down to access the trail.
For your safety and to support the rehab effort, please do not access the Skinny Trail which has been taped off.
Please share this information! Thank you!

(May 27/8:45am) FATS Update!
The weather system that moved through south to north dropped another inch of rain according to the gauges in the vicinity of FATS. Please let the trails dry out AT LEAST 24 hours before use. Stay tuned for updates!
We have only received 3 inches in May unfortunately 2 of those 3 inches were this week.
We truly appreciate our amazing biking and running community, who have respected the closure of Skinny during the rehab.
Unfortunately one rider picked a bad week to ignore the signage and rolled out and back on upper Skinny. This will be damage they will need to repair once things have dried out and they are back on the job. Time and money spent repairing not rehabbing.

(July 1/9:30pm) FATS Update!
Lots of pop-up storms today. FATS took a direct hit just after noontime. Based on the gauges we use looks like between 1/2 and 3/4 of an inch.
Trails should be good to go by tomorrow afternoon if the area doesn’t get more rain.
Pop-ups can be unpredictable and although we try to keep a keen eye out when they are in the area it can be missed. If you go out to ride and find the trail is too wet to ride (leaving grooves in the tread, lots of standing water, etc) please do not ride the trail and report those conditions to sorba.csra@gmail.com
Thank you!

(July 7/11:55pm) FATS Update!
Severe thunderstorms rolled through the area. Although some areas of the CSRA were hit with 4 or 5 inches of rain, the gauges we use in conjunction with FATS reflect about an inch of rain. With no additional rain things need to dry out for 24 to 48 hours. That holds true if there is no additional rain on Friday. Stay tuned for updates!
