WHAT: 4 race time trial series
WHERE: Canal Singletrack; Meet at the main trailhead at the bottom of the stairs
WHEN: Friday nights, May 25th and June 1/8/15
WHAT TIME: Registration opens at 6:30, first racer off the line at 7:00
WHY: Fun and SORBA-CSRA Membership drive
WHO: Everyone!
PRICE: $5/race for IMBA-SORBA members, $8/race for non members

Sign up for an IMBA-SORBA membership ($30) at the race and race all four races for free!! In other words, by joining IMBA-SORBA you'll save a little money and help cycling advocacy all at the same time. If you aren't a member yet, this is a great time to sign up! We will have membership forms on hand at each race, and we'll even mail them in for you.

THIS IS FOR FUN
The Canal Crown is about having fun. It is not a serious competition. Everyone from beginners to experts are encouraged to come out and battle the clock around the trail. This is a low key, low pressure, fun evening in the woods.

CHANGES FROM LAST YEAR
-Moved the race to a Friday night, which should make it easier for folks to attend.
-No one races Razor’s Edge this year.
-You cannot park at the pumping station anymore, and must ride to the trail from either downtown (you could park at the Kroc Center, or at AJBW), the Savannah Rapids Pavilion, Eisenhower Park, or Lake Olmstead.

WHERE DO THE ENTRY FEES GO?
Entry fees will be used to pay for the awards party and prizes at the end of the season. Left over funds will be saved for trail improvements.

CLASSES & COURSES:
Like previous years there will be four classes: Ladies, Beginner, Sport, and Expert. However, this year everyone will race the same course, and no one will race Razor’s Edge.

NO SANDBAGGING
We reserve the right to move you up a class. We’re not trying to rob you of a chance to win, we just want people in the right place. The guys winning the Beginner class shouldn’t be close to the podium in the Sport class, know what I mean? The goal is to have as little overlap between the classes as we can.

RAIN
If there’s enough rain so racing would damage the trail we will postpone a week. If we postpone, it will be announced in this thread, in this post at the very top, so bookmark this page for easy reference.

RACING
Racers are sent out onto the 2.8 mile course one at a time, at either one minute or 30 second intervals. Start and end times are recorded and used to calculate lap times. Faster racers are sent out before slower racers to minimize passing, and only a few racers are out at a time so there is no head-on traffic on the two way section of trail. Racers will ride one lap. Lap times are typically in the 11 - 17 minute range.

AWARDS
Trophies will be awarded to the top 3 racers in each class at each race. Super Awesome awards will be given to the top 3 in the overall series.

OVERALL SERIES
There are four race dates, 2 will be raced CW, 2 CCW. Racer's overall time is found by adding their fastest CW and CCW times together. The racer with the fastest overall time will be crowned the Canal King or Queen!

AWARDS PARTY
Sometime after the final race we’ll have an awards party at Andy Jordan's Bicycle Warehouse with food, drinks, prizes, and we’ll award the series overall trophies. All racers and volunteers are invited. Date and time TBD.

PLEASE BE ON TIME FOR REGISTRATION!!!!
The Canal Crown gets bigger every year, and in order to get everyone around the course, final times calculated, and trophies handed out before dark we need to start on time. Also, since we can’t park at the trail because the tow path is closed, we all have to ride to and from the trail. It's not a bad idea to bring a light for the ride back to your car, just in case.

Again, this series is all about having fun! You don't have to be a hard core racer to come out and have fun. This is a family affair, and is a great chance to hang out with bunch of like minded people who all enjoy riding their bikes in the woods. If you've never done a race, this a great first race.

Quick Update:

Due to our excitement we didn't take a close enough look at the calendar, and originally scheduled the first race for May 18th...the same weekend as the Lock to Lock ride. So, we're pushing the series back a week. The original main post has been updated to show the changes.

So I rode with Dustin on Sunday.

We talked about many things.....including my new found love for the Canal Trail. I live near it now and just ride to it from the house.

The topic turned to the TT, where I expressed my desire to participate.

And then Dustin told me this.

"no one will race Razor’s Edge."

Huh?

I find it hard to believe that this section isn't everyone's favorite at the Canal singletrack.

Not related to the TT: And we need to get rid of the two way traffic section. It will be easy to do.

Yea, I embarrassed myself fussing at someone for going the wrong way on that section one day.

Maybe you reserve "the edge" for the top two classes or something?

Some of the people in Sport wont race it, and we don't want to 'make' them race it if they aren't comfortable with it. That's why we're just eliminating it this year, so we can move people to an apropriate class as needed.

I don't know why people don't like Razor's Edge. It's not that hard, or dangerous. But most folks don't like it. On last night's ride there was about a dozen of us, and I think Drew and I were the only two people who rode Razor's Edge.

That said, the ride last night was super fun. Here's a crappy pic of most of the group.

I call that Beginner class. I was once in the beginner class. They are some fast riders in the beginner class.

All this said, the important thing is having fun in the woods no matter what you ride.

And it looks like there is fun being had.

I have been wanting to come to a Wed night ride. Now I really want to .... and encourage folks to ride Razor's Edge. It is easy and they will get a thrill out of conquering it. Most folks don't realize what they are capable of until they try something.

I rode the edge 2x last night. I think I was behind you both times though. I like it but it honestly needs to be cut back a good deal to be safe for me. There are sections of VERY rigid branches that I physically cannot pass without them entering the holes in my helmet.

I can see why there is only one lap per event but could we not add a second lap later for the rivet rider types then add the time together?

I agree, it needs some trimming. There's a few places I have to duck to get through right now, so I'm sure it's harder for you 6ft+ fellas. We'll get it in shape soon.

2 laps...there's not time really, we're usually getting done pretty close to dark. And I don't recall anyone finishing a lap and wanting to do another ;D

At the winter Moonlight TT, where the crowd is smaller and no worries about running out of light (since it's all in the dark) we do two laps. We didn't this year because we got rained on, but we had planned on doing two that night.

I'm really looking forward to the series, it's one of my favorite parts of summer now! I need to figure out who has the bullhorn....

Yes sir I WAS that far back. You and Drew slithered off into the weeds like two lizards. I get it about the time constraints. Thanks for heading up this event, I really appreciate the change to meet new folks and coough up a lung in a totally new environment.

Less than 2 weeks from round 1! Anyone want to make predictions? Got a target time or anything like that?

The weather forecast is iffy for today, currently there's a 40-70% chance of rain, depending on which forecast you look at.

Right now the plan is to race, but stay tuned to this thread, and watch the first post, right at the very top - any updates will be posted there. We'll try and make the call by 5:00, but with these pop up summer showers it's tough. After 5, call AJBW and ask for the status.

If we don't get rained out this week, I'm expecting perfect race conditions tonight. Weds the trail was in great shape, only a little damp. After a few days to dry out, it'll be fast tonight.
