Trail was in good shape last night. Tacky pretty much everywhere except a little slick in one corner, and the one perpetual mud hole.
Two things need to happen out there.
1 - there's that one corner with a mud hole, near the spot with rock armoring over the drainage pipe. This spot stays wet longer than everything else out there. I'd love to armor this corner. Anyone know if there's rock/brick/concrete nearby?
2 - the low hanging tree on the two-way section needs to come out, it's getting lower and lower and lower. Soon it'll snatch someone off their bike by their head. Let's cut it out.

I was planning on cutting out the low hanging tree, maybe I can get to it this weekend. As far at the mud hole, I'll be glad to help with that. Just let me know when.

Trails were in great shape today. Did five laps and they were dry and fast. Nice work on removing the tree on the main section near the front. I always worried about catching my head on that one. NO more worries.
IS is just me, or is that an exorbitant about of people riding these trails with no helmets? Come on parents, kids aren't gonna wear their helmets if you aren't willing to do so. Be the example.

The trail was rockin' last night. Hero dirt. Lots of green coming back to the woods. Spring is, by far, my favorite time of year for riding the canal, it's just beautiful out there! And daylight savings time is woooonderful! On last night's Weds. night ride we didn't need lights until the ride back to the shop. Here's a few pics from last spring. It's like this out there now, but wont be for long, so go ride it before the woods fill in and the trail becomes a dark tunnel.

Bumped into a rider who had gone down to ride this trail and said there were a lot of trees down so he had to turn back. Has anyone been down there in the past few days? He was out there around mid-week.

Yes.. Nate and I fought the evil trees Sat. evening.. Talk about a mess.. Thought we were going to have to leave the chainsaw stuck in a tree, but a few railroad spikes and a half an hour later we got it free.. We got it rideable.. Drew, Kim and Michael Dunn went down this morning and cleared up the smaller mess we left (to darn tired after battling the tree).. A portion of the trail is gone though via uprooted tree.. It's on the high side opposite of Razors Edge.. It can be fixed, but the tree has to be moved first.. We had a big saw, just a big tree.. So, right now the trail is more like a lollipop.. Maybe JP can work some chainsaw magic..

Think Kim, Drew and Michael spent about four hours down there this morning, so all the other parts of the trail should be in A+ shape..

Or did a tree fall across the trail? I went down there Saturday morning with good intentions, and after clearing a very short section of Razor's Edge my hedge trimmer died. Waste of a morning. Big thanks to Ross/Nate/Drew/Kim/Michael for doing what they could! I was able to open up this section of Razor's Edge. Before: After: I cut this tree out with a hand saw on Razor's Edge: And this is the mess Ross and Nate took care of:

Here is a pic of the damage done to the trail.... I am standing in the center of the trail with my back to the tree that Ross and Nate could not get cut out.

The tree is cut out. Michael left the RR spikes in the tree--new landmark! Wow, you all did a lot of work.

The hole left by the uproot is rideable; just another feature unless wear and tear change the angles.

The hole left by the uproot is rideable; just another feature unless wear and tear change the angles. It is rideable, but it rides really bad, doesn't flow at all, and it's pretty offcamber. We looked at it last night and the plan is to do a little work on it, just turn it into a dip. Cut the hump out of the middle and bench the trail through the hole, and fix the backslope which has a hole in it now that will lead to erosion. Not sure when we'll get to it though. Big thanks to everyone that did work out there! Trail was fast last night, a little sandy in places, but fast.

Thanks to everyone that worked on the Canal trail, it looked like it was in quite a mess. I was out of town with Jon T. getting in a little last minute skiing and riding some of the trails in Fruita, CO. Those trail are awsome!

It's just a little abrupt unless you come to a crawl. A little smoothing over with a McLeod, a year of wheels, and it will just become part of the trail. MD

My neighbor and I went out and rode the Canal tonight, started off at the Headgates, down to the singletrack, 2 laps and back. Saw a ton of geese, 4 muscrat, and a dude riding the singletrack on a unicycle! Seriously, a unicycle on singletrack trail! Wish I could have gotten a picture, but he was finishing a lap as we were starting it and didn't run back into him. The trail was in great shape, delightfully tacky. All the recent work was greatly appreciated. There were a couple tree branches and vines hanging in the trail in the corner directly after the new dip (traveling CW) that I was able to cut out with a hand saw. The best part of the day: Ben the neighbor enjoying the furniture:

A great big thank you to whomever filled in the big hump left by the tree falling over. It is much more fluid to ride now, that is for sure. Watch out for the turtles, they are sneaky little buggers. There was one good sized one that was out in the middle of the trail when I was finishing, thought we might of had a standoff. ;D
