David Kozlowski and I cleaned Modoc today; lots of deadfall down after the fire and we cut branches, etc. The trail is in good shape for the Summit. There is 4-wheeler damage from miles 1 to 4 prox. Grass and weeds along the trail growing like crazy, might need a DR this year.....

Please, anyone riding Modoc during the Summit and beyond, be mindful of the creek crossings. The rocks in the bottom of the creeks have a thick layer of algae on them. No amount of tread can keep you from becoming a victim as was demonstrated over the last few weeks by a few of my riding buddies.

Ted you couldn't be more right, I had two splash downs and on my return to the parking lot wiped out on the little wooden bridge(very first bridge on way in), never saw it coming the front wheel just slipped right off. No big deal though bent the big chain ring and had a minor bruise and some scratches. I should of read this before going out. : ) Have fun out there. Aloha

Saturday - Only one new tree within first 1/2 mile (and one across the gravel road about a mile from the end of the trail - small ride around forming)

Eric- sure you rode Modoc? I don't remember a gravel road a mile from the end of the trail (would be at the 4.5 mile mark) unless you did a loop and went out the FS road towards the race track?

Jon, Yes - A mile past the end of the trail/connector on the gravel road that loops you around past the Saw Mill out onto 28 and then down 23 back to the car - 10 mile loop right @ 1 hour (a little tongue & cheek car humor about the ride around) I always worry about oncomming cars on that gravel road due to the tight curves & high downhill speeds, and so after a the downhills about a mile after the connector, I come upon a large pine all the way across the road and into the woods on both sides. Well no need to worry about cars between the end of the trail & that point, as its not a rider, well maybe for a monster truck, but a 3 ft section of the tree broke @ the road side ditch, so I rolled it off and went around.

Make some (mental) notes about what work, if any, needs to be done on the trail.
And let us know here.

That's Jon's reason (well one reason) we are riding tonight - he's already worried about the Explore The Trails Ride on August 8th - scout now, work soon, nice ETTR.

Well it was a good ride. The trail is in good shape, a little washboard action due to some heavy rain made the trail a little rougher than usual & 4 or 5 trees across the trail, but its all good. Jon plans to clear the trail this Saturday.

Dale Parrott, Banks Mumford, and I cleaned the trail Saturday; cut about 5 trees. There are a few sections where I need to get the weedeater in, but the trail is in good shape. I rode the "loop" with Eric last Thursday for the first time- easier than coming back on the trail but the FS road has a long hill. Anyone that has worried about Modoc being only out-and-back into the middle of nowhere should be reassured that there is very good Forest Service roads to the 2 mile point (marked by the "A" sign) and to the back end. Turn left and go uphill when you get to the traditional "end". There is a left turn at the top of the hill then a short ride to the FS cul-de-sac.

Used the weed eater for several miles this past Saturday. It did a good job in the grassy area near the end and at the 2 mile hill. However, had some trouble with the bigger bamboo weeds and when I hit fallen branches, etc they would break the string. It also is a gas hog. Ear and eye protection is a must! Wished I had my face shield. The hedge trimmer is better for anything other than grass and the DR is better than the hand tools. However the hand tools are easy to carry in a car and one person can get a fair amount of work done.

Yea, I was talking to John P. about the weedeater vs hedger yesterday. Unless have you have a hefty one made for heavy duty work, you will wear yourself out feeding string; and the big boys suck a lot of fuel. I wonder if anyone has any experience with the various "bladed" heads on weedeaters? I've used a brushcutter head on mine before which was just basically a circular saw blade which does not work well on anything but solid stems.

The weedeater is definitely a heavy-duty model. I have a 4-spoke blade for it, but did not think about taking it with me. No doubt it would have worked better in many areas. I have not left the blade in the trailer since it is a little trickier to install, and, more importantly, much more dangerous, especially with the chest strap tying the trimmer to you. I worked with a guy that was cutting weeds in a ditch, he slipped, the trimmer chased him, and he ended up with somewhere around 80 stitches.

Rode Modoc and Turkey (via the connector) on Sunday. Modoc has a few "new" trees/large limbs down. The limbs were too big for me to move, but could be cut with a hand saw.
