I was on GW yesterday. Only had to stop once for a small piece of trash. To be honest, what I saw is that they left the trail (or at least GW) better then what they found it in. Big thumbs up to the trail runners that policed the trails after the race.

I have been riding since '92 and there are times that after every climb I stop and have to catch my breathe. Nothing wrong with it, let a lone nothing to be ashamed with if you need stop and push. We have all done it and no matter how experienced you are, if you ride a lot you will do it again.

Deep Step (ccw) and Tower (cw) are the only ones that I stick to one direction the others I love to mix it up since they are great rides either way. I would try DS, Big Rock and Tower. Great trails.

Rode from the dam to mile marker 10.5. Two trees down, first between 2.5 and marker 3 at the top of the switch back. Goes along the trail, can ride by but not sure if it on the trail r just really close to it. The other is between 3 and marker 3.5. Pretty sure a ride-around will form around this one. Other then tat the trail in this section is great.

Why mt bikers should wear some sort of eye protection? Pretty sure the branch hit my glasses before my nose. Bled crazy mad. Took 10 minutes of direct pressure to stop it. As the Black Knight would say "It's just a flesh wound."

Just got back from a family vacation in Banner Elk. We rode Overmountain Victory Trail over ar Kerr Scott. Very awesome trail. My 7 yr old got tired after the first two miles and the wife turned around with her and said "Go ride" Such lovely words. Did OVT and it was not on a map but the new loop near Berry Mountain. Nice smooth trails with crazy fast bermed corners. Nothing technical but just plain fun. Reminded me of FATS a bit before it started to mature. Will have to plan a trip back there and ride Dark Mountain and Warrior Creek. Also rode, spent time at Rocky Knob outside of Boone. Great little trail system. Daughters did not care for it because of the rocks......again the wife said those lovely words. Really enjoyed the rocks, skills area, pump track, and descents. Daughters really enjoyed the "rope" playground. Not really a destination but worth the stop if in the area. Last place I rode was Sugar Mountain (our condo was slope side) and stayed on the more cross country and access roads. Not sure if the El Mar would like the designated downhill trails. Planned on riding it a few times but the upper our free days it was raining and in the clouds. El Mar almost to the the summit of Sugar Mountain Summit of Sugar Mountain looking over/down at the eye sore of our condo at Sugartop with Grandfather Mountain behind and partially in the clouds. Rest of the vacation was hiking, going into a cavern, and just spending some great times with my wife and two youngest daughter. Did not take many pics, was just having to much fun riding. I was informed later that Beech Mountain also has some cross country trails, along with downhill course, called the "Emerald Outback" and being built in part by Long Cane. Eight miles so far with up to 25 miles planned. Trail map showed riding elevations from around 5000 to 5400 ft above sea level. We drove through beech Mountain and have to say that the views would be awesome. emeraldoutback.com/

Just a heads up n the backdoor, There is one "false" rake-a-trail before you get to the legit one. Look for the tape in the woods.

Noticed what looks like a Garmin heart monitor (the part that goes around the chest) on the north lot at FATS

This is the time of year that pop-up showers roll thru the area. One place may get hit hard while a few miles away get nothing. An example of this was last weekend my place (off of Hardy McManus) got 4" of rain in just over an hour while a few miles away a friend was playing golf at Jone's Creek and they had about 10 minutes worth of light rain.
That being said, if you show up at a FATS or another trailhead, look around to see if the trails are to wet to ride.
edit: I once was out at the far end of Brown Wave when the skies opened up and the trail turned into a kayak course. By the time i was half way back on the top of Skinny the trails were completely dry.

Just found out that Outdoor Augusta, an adventure gear and clothing consignment store will be opening across the street from Chain Reaction in Evans. Stuck my head in today and saw some kayaks, tents, skateboards, etc. The owner mentioned there will be bike also. www.outdooraugusta.com

Long Cane may be the best kept riding secret in the CSRA. Only rode there once and could not believe how awesome the trail was. Did about 28 miles that day. Planning on being there. Would also be interested in an earlier start to do either ride the outer loop or a figure eight. The "Antelope" with a Long Cane paint job

Great Wall had 3 non-riders. One near the bridge, one somewhere near marker 2.5 and the other is between the rock bridge and great wall proper. With the burn and winds there are quite a few small riders. Looked like the control burn was hot in spots, many trees shedding most if not all their needles.
Last week I noticed a few down on Skinny but was caught in a down pour and was just trying to ride out.

Ross, the 15 minute drink, 45 minute gel and hour endurolyte (which one do you use) works well? Did you eat any solid food? Nutrition/hydration is my killer for long rides.
