(Feb 16th/1:30pm) FATS Update!
FATS is still under official closure by the US Forest Service. Trail check revealed seeps, some as long as 40 feet long, are still active. The ground water needs to drop more before the seeps will stop. Expect FATS will be closed through the weekend but we will provide updates.

FATS is under official closure by the US Forest Service. The area around FATS has already had over 2 inches of rain with more to come.
The amount of rain coupled with the dormant season and cooler temps will likely result in FATS being closed for the week. Stay tuned for updates and please help spread the word.

Heads up all FATS trail users and please help spread the word!!!
People have reported items stolen out of their vehicles at both the main FATS and north FATS trailheads. In some cases the vehicles were accessed through unlocked doors and in other cases windows were broken.
This happens periodically in remote parking lots and the most important deterrent is to avoid leaving anything of value in your vehicle.
Some people even leave their vehicles unlocked and with windows partially down to avoid broken windows.
Please report any suspicious activity!

(Feb 18/1:30pm) FATS Update!
As a reminder FATS is still under official closure by the US Forest Service. We have confirmed with the Long Cane Ranger District that their Call Before You Haul line is currently down. We will advise, as always, status changes as they occur!
The seeps are subsiding and there will be a more thorough check this afternoon. As always we will be working closely with the USFS to get the trails back open as soon as the risk of trail damage by users has passed! Thank you!

(Jan10/8:30am) Preliminary update after the storm …..all local trails will need some time to dry out!
The area around FATS received about 2 inches of rain so it’s going to take a few days to dry out. This amount of rain on top of the rain over the weekend will result in seeps at FATS that won’t stop until the water table drops. FATS remains under official USFS closure. Stay tuned for updates.
Steven’s Creek is currently over flood stage by 3 feet which will mean flooding on parts of the Modoc, Wine Creek and Turkey Creek Trails. We will provide updates as they come in.
The Lake Thurmond/Clarks Hill Lake pool level was already low and remains below full pool (330 feet) at 322 feet so should no pose a flooding threat to Bartram, Keg Creek or Hickory Knob State Park Trails.
The new areas of the Augusta Canal Singletrack are particularly vulnerable after these heavy rains so please help spread the word to avoid using those areas until they have dried out! Thank you With all the wind we are expecting trees down on the trails and as things begin to dry out we will give those reports as they come in!
Due to the rate of rain as a portion of the system moved through we are also anticipating some erosion on the trails as well.
They are predicting another system of lesser intensity to roll through on Friday.

(Jan 9/8:30am) FATS Update!
Using an abundance of caution due to the coming storms with high winds/rain the US Forest Service has officially temporarily closed FATS.
Given the number of trees we cut off the trails each year we highly recommend all trail users stay off all local trails!
Stay tuned for updates! Thank you

Trails should be good to go by Saturday. Other local trails should be good to go if you want to get a ride/run in. Thank you.

(Dec 19/3:15pm) FATS Update!
Trail check revealed active seeps, trails will need at least another day to dry out.
That indicates the ground water is up and seeping onto the trails. It needs to drop so the trails can dry out. Sun alone won’t solve this common winter issue.
Other trails in our area don’t have the seep issues that FATS does so are the perfect alternative!
Stay tuned for updates!

(Dec 17/6:30pm) FATS Update!
Rain moved in at midnight Saturday night and is finally moving out of the area. Just under 2 inches of rain fell in the FATS area.
Given the cooler temps and dormant foliage it will probably be 48 to 72 hours before the trails dry out. Please allow the trails to dry out before accessing the trails to prevent damage to the tread.
We will post updates! Thank you!

(Dec 12/2pm) FATS Update!
Trail check revealed the majority of the tread is good to go! There are some sloppy/mucky areas so please stay in the middle of the trail. Please help keep the singletrack single.
As a heads up we are coming into the winter months and between colder weather and dormant foliage it will take longer for trails to dry out after rain.
In addition, for approximately the next 6 months crews will be out replacing the wooden poles on the power lines with metal ones.
They are using heavy equipment so there will be a potential for trail damage. Just be aware each time you are out during this period since the potential for changing trail conditions across those power lines could change from day to day.

It has been dry for a few days leading in so trails should be good to go in about 24 hours.

(Nov 27/6:45am)FATS Update!
Although it rained for several hours yesterday, gauges indicate the area around FATS received less than a quarter of an inch. There might still be a few soft areas from the rain a few days ago, please stay in the trail through any of those areas to avoid widening the trail! Thank you!
