Rode a couple laps of the canal today, trail is almost perfect. Fared well considering the rain. Little traction climbing the first hill to the R.R. tracks due to wet leaves, other than that, trail hooks up well with only a couple small spots of soft silt. Believe it or not the tow path is in much worse shape.

2-2-08, trail is perfect with only two small spots of soft mud on the pond side. No trees down or ecessive debris. Happy trails!

The towpath takes the hits because of the work trucks that run up and down it regardless of the condition of the road or amount of rain we've had. Not sure what they do up there but do know the road is worse for wear after periods of rain because of it!
Glad to hear about the canal MTB trail - it has had a lot of work through the years and since it is an urban trail folks don't necessarily see any need to stay off it when it is really too wet to ride some how it always manages to survive!
I find it interesting over a course of years how an area will be armored and then the next season when it is rainy again a whole other area will be muddy or wet. Some of the areas that were filled were filled with a combination of cat litter and dirt and have held up very nicely for quite a long time.

I ride up the towpath to work and once decided to ask the guys in the trucks what they do. He said they "inspect" the levee and other small gates on the way as they drive to the main lock which, unless I'm mistaken, is in control of the city of Augusta and not Columbia county. Some may not agree, but the evidence is there that some better type of reinforcement is needed other than just scraping the road surface twice a year. Pay attention to the surface as you get closer/farther from the Savannah Rapids Pavilion and you'll see the difference.
