A few big rocks. Steep sideslope everywhere. Lots of big trees. Big bowls to ride thru, up and down.
A few big rocks along the way. Some to ride over, some to just ride near, and look at. But they are cool. The really big one sits on a very step hillside. From the high side, the rock is 12' tall. From the low side, maybe 30' tall. You'll see the 30' side as you approach it and then turn and ride past the 12' side. This rock sits in an area with several rocks we plan to make the trail go over. Picture a VW beetle buried up to the doors and the top being a rock sticking out of the ground.
I walked/GPS'd/tight flagged parts of both loops Saturday and Sunday and my ankles hurt from all the steep sidehills I was walking across. I have found very few sections that have lost all/most of its flagging. For the most part, the original flags are there. When I can't find one, I can usually get to one in pretty short order and then just tight flag it back to the last known flag.
Lots of big trees in big bowl shaped sections of the woods. I'd say we are looking at some really cool trails to ride. Longer climbs/descents than even Deep Step has. Some of the hillsides have a mountain feel to them they are soooooo steep. I was crawling on hand and knees one of them was so steep.
The contract is done. I haven't signed it yet, but I am the last of four signatures that need to go on it. I approved the final version last week.
The low spot is on the Deep Step Rd, about 190' above sea level. The high spot is near the firetower on Woodlawn Rd....540 above sea level. I'd guess these spots are 2.5-3 miles apart with about a mile of paved/gravel and 2 miles of singletrack. This is more climbing than the Brown Wave has in almost 6 miles.
FATS is getting bigger, badder, steeper, rockier, and everything else one could think to make it a better place to ride your bike.
