Long Cane Trails, LLC will be turning in a 2007 RTP Grant Application to build 9-10 more miles at the Forks Area Trail System located in Clarks Hill, SC. The application is due March 23, 2007.
One of the requirements is a public meeting with comments. We've had about 5 public meetings concerning these trails over the years, dating back to 1998.
A little history. In 2004, we were awarded a $100,000 grant, matched it with 1,500 volunteer hours and $15,000 cash and built 17 miles of trail. We then got $70,000 from the USFS and built another 8 miles.
We'd like to get another $100,000 to build the final 9-10 miles. We will be using 500 volunteer hours and $20,000 cash to match the grant. In addition to the construction, the grant will pay for a map kiosk at the trailhead and signage on all 35 miles of trail
This application is supported by the CSRA Chapter of SORBA (putting up the 500 volunteer hours and $10,000) and the USFS (putting up $10,000). IMBA is a supporter as well.
The effort for these trails goes back over 10 years. Local riders approached the USFS in 1994 about making a set of trails in the area "legal". While this was never done, the USFS advised these riders to get organized in order to deal with a gov't agency like the USFS. The CSRA Chapter of SORBA was formed in 1999 to be the USFS's partner in making these trails happen. In 2003, the USFS got onboard, and the trails were designed by IMBA, Trail Design Specialists and Long Cane Trails. Construction began in August 2005 and 25 miles were wrapped up in May 2006.
I'd like to use this thread to hear comments from the public on FATS.
Do you support this grant application? If so why, or why not?
Please include your name, city and any comments you wish to make. We will include the comments here in our grant application.
Thanks,
Bill Victor
