I just signed the contract for phase 2! It will complete the three loops we originally thought were 17 miles (they are more like 19.25 miles) and will build another loop estimated at 5 miles.
Long Cane Trails had already started on these sections based on the fact we were 99% sure the contract would come thru. It did, and today I am mailing back the documents to the USFS.
The 5ish mile loop will take us into the first of the "bowl" areas of the Tower. These are large cereal bowl shaped landscapes with steep sideslopes and ridgelines running between the bowls. It is kinda like a minuature, very scaled down version of Vail's bowls that I have skiied. I can't emphasize how minature they are compared to Vail, CO., but they are bowls nonetheless.
It is very much like mountainous terrain sitting at 500' above sea level. The sideslopes are above 60% in places - that's steep.
This same loop will also pick up sustainable parts of the old Tower Trail. With sections of the old "Best seven tenths" and "the Hate" being part of the new FATS. We don't plan to do much to the tread in these sections - just clear the corridor and add some drains in places that need it.
We're rolling into the March 25th Grand Opening of Phase One. 1273 volunteer hours to date. 14 miles are finished. We'll do one more mile and then let the last 2 miles get finished on March 25th.
We still need volunteers this Saturday and next Sunday.
