The answer to all your questions is..... I do not know, but I do know that the trails will get built!!!!! The first grant proposal was not funded, but we hope the second grant proposal will get funded.
The "how are we going to build the FATS" is still being discussed. We know that building all the FATS by hand would take years and all our other trails would suffer because everyone would be working on the FATS. That means we need access to dirt moving machines. These machines need money to operate. So bottom line, we need thousands of $$$$$.

Best case is construction begins in the spring of 2005.
Volunteer work will be done on weekends. Probably consisting of a full weekend a month where work is going on from 8-5. People can come in various shifts as their schedules permit. The crew will rough in about two miles of trail on a Thursday and Friday. Then on that Saturday and Sunday, while it is still fresh, the volunteers will do the hand finishing work. If we have 21 show up per day, and each person finishes 250 feet of trail (that will take 4-7 hours), than we can finish two miles a weekend. This is probably a little optimistic, but I also think we will have some dedicated, well trained individuals that are out there finishing some trail as they have the time.
The first phase is 3 loops that are about 17 miles. The plan is for 5.8 miles to be done completely by the crew, with no volunteers. The other 11.2 miles will be done as described above. So, if it all goes well, it will take five and half months to build the 17 miles. Again best case, we could be riding singletrack out there by the summer of 2005.
I can't promise this schedule, but I have never been more sure that it will happen, soon.

GAME ON!
Hopefully construction starts in 2-4 weeks.
We need 1500 volunteer hours to get the money to get this done.
It works like this: they give us $100,000 and we match it with $25,000. The USFS is kicking in $10,000 cash and the 1,500 volunteer hours are valued at $15,000.
Please reply here if you plan to help....

We hope to start May 9, 2005.
We need 1,500 volunteer hours. Ed Coyle is going to be busy!
Should we not proceed with this project? 1 person can not supply 1,500 volunteer hours.

We have a lot of dedicated volunteers that have already signed on to volunteer hours for FATS construction. We will be getting in contact with each of them over the next couple of weeks as well as asking for other volunteers to give their time as well. This trail is crucial to our area for many reasons and will be the closest trail of any significant length to the greater Augusta/North Augusta/Aiken area - be sure to encourage all your fellow mountain bikers - SORBA-CSRA members or not - also any civic groups looking to give volunteer hours to donate time to construction of this trail. Thanks!!

Hopefully I'm already on someones list, but if not, Bill you've got my address. The further out you can schedule stuff the better my chances of making it. I'll do my best.
You missed a good ride Saturday btw. Maybe next year.

FATS is located just across the river into South Carolina. Take Highway 28 out of Georgia into SC. Take the first road to your right (Hopewell Church Road) after the river. Go to the end. Turn right at the stop sign. The gravel road on your right will take you to the trail head for the first phase. Most of the trail will be on the West side of this gravel road.

We should be able to break ground in June 2005.
I've seen a first draft of the Project Agreement. Hopefully we will wrap up the Agreement on Monday.
A lot of work to do. About 90,000 feet of trail to build. 60,000 of which has to be hand finished by volunteers. For reference, Horn Creek Trail is about 30,000 feet.
We are gathering equipment and crew.
