2013 Baker's dozen is cancelled
Dear Members of CSRA mountain bike community,
On behalf of the SORBACSRA Board of Directors, I regret to inform you that the 2013 Baker’s Dozen endurance mountain bike race has been canceled for both the race date of October 19th and the rain date of October 26th. Several factors affected this carefully considered decision, including, but not limited to: low registration (only 22 riders registered), uncertainty of when the government will resume normal operations, uncertainty of how soon Lick Fork Recreation Area would reopen after the U.S. Forest Service resumed normal operations, and limiting our projected financial loss.
Participants already registered for the Baker’s Dozen will receive a full refund of their entry fee, including active.com processing fees, and we ask that the volunteer who won the free BD entry at Hickory Knob/National Trails Day on June 1st contact us so we can discuss alternate arrangements.
Our goal for the 2013 Baker’s Dozen was ~100 registered riders, which would have resulted in a modest profit for the club and be used to support our trail advocacy efforts. At this point in time, and less than one week from race day, we are projecting that this year’s BD will fall far short of this goal and current uncertainty with government operations is unlikely to increase last minute registrations. While SORBACSRA does not necessarily seek to make a large profit off this event, we cannot continue losing money on our major fundraiser of the year. Nonetheless, SORBACSRA and its Board of Directors still would like to sponsor a smaller scale, less costly, donation-driven mountain bike race later this fall; either as a stand alone event at Horn Creek or as part of an already scheduled event using another trail in the CSRA (we still have award glasses, prizes, and tchotchkes to give away). As with any event, participation by the mountain bike community is critical for success – both from a financial perspective, as well as from the viewpoint of the few volunteers that do the bulk of the work to make these events possible and enjoyable for participants.
Again, we regret having to make this decision and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Thank you and we appreciate your support of SORBACSRA.
