The canal trail is going to need a lot of work this winter. A lot. As Michael mentioned in the conditions thread, it's in terrible shape right now. The one spot that tends to stay wet is wetter than I've ever seen it, and there hasn't even been rain in several days, it should be dry now. The gully is a massive sand pit. A few of the steepies are eroding away, new roots are exposed, there's big drops/steps due to those roots, and the bottoms are loose deep sand. Also, the section of trail with the Giant Hole, on the other side of that hill there's a good bit of erosion, new holes are developing there as well.
Here's what I think needs done, if anyone else has other ideas or thoughts please speak up!
I'd also like to get a section of trail built that would turn the trail into a true loop and avoid the two way section. The two way is dangerous, visibility is limited, and it's the highest speed section of the entire trail, coming from either direction. We should be able to put a new piece of trail on the hillside near the railroad tracks that would by-pass the two way and make the trail a true loop.
Once the weather is finally cooled off and some of the uber-thick vegetation down there dies back for the winter we need to plan some work parties and get the best little trail in Augusta back into good, and sustainable, shape.

- The sandy steepies need armoring, the hill itself, and the bottom. We've got to stop the sand from just washing away every time it rains.
- The Wet Spot needs armoring, or possibly a re-route to get it out of the flat and up on a hillside, I haven't looked to see how possible that is though.
- The gully needs something, but I'm not sure what exactly. A reroute may be needed there.
- The Giant Hole needs a reroute. We should be able to take the trail onto the hill side there and miss the hole and the rutted out section on the other side of that hill.
