I had not been on the Canal trail in a while, but rode it Thursday and today. Is it just me, or has the tread widened considerably at spots where there are roots and other obstructions?

Yes. That trail is in a constant state of flux, it's a little different every week. The rains last week changed it a lot too from what I hear.
It gets a lot more use than I think most people realize. And a lot of the users aren't the most educated on proper trail etiquette.

After FATS, I am pretty sure it is the most used trail in the CSRA.

After seeing the trail last night, that is NOT the usual condition. The rains really took their toll on the trail. There was sand in places I've never seen it before, like the bottom of the stairs - where did that even come from??? That section has been loose before, but nothing like it was last night.
Must have been a whole lotta water in not a lotta time that fell on that trail.
