Had a great ride out at Ft. Yargo this weekend. It was one of those days when (almost) everything came together perfectly. The weather was just perfect, the trails were stupid fast, and my legs felt surprisngly good all day.
I entered the 9hr solo, my first ever 9hr. But around 4.5ish hours into the race my stomach started feeling...wrong. Apparently Gatorade, apple cinnamon gu, PB&J's, bananas, and Coke is not a good combination for me. Pretty sure it was the Coke that unsettled things, this was my first time trying it. Thought the caffenine would help. I pulled the plug after my 5th lap, wasn't sure I could do another without throwing up. I finished 55 miles in just over 6hrs race time; my computer showed 5:38 for moving time. I was happy with the ride. I did a good job pacing myself and felt strong all day. This was the biggest ride I've done since December. Apparently I wasn't the only person who pulled the plug early, I finished 10th out 12 in the 9hr solo sport class.
The Augusta Cross Coalition had a great showing, with two teams in the 6hr. The Phelans (in their first time ever doing this), and took first place in the 2person co-ed class by just a few seconds! Way to go!! Mosovich was also there with a team mate in the 6hr, they finished 15th out of 34, not bad considering how sick Mosovich has been lately.
If you haven't ridden Ft. Yargo, you gotta go ride it! This weekend it was just CRAZY fast! All hardpack clay, some very very fast open sections, some tight and twisty sections, and about 100ft of climbing per mile. My favorite part of the course was a short downhill that started will a roller into a dip. You didn't even have to try get air, it just happens. You were never far from the ground, but since you dropped down into the dip you actually fell about 5ft before your tires touched down again. I landed perfect everytime in the transition at the bottom of the dip, buttery smooth, rediculously fun. The DH ended with a fast banked turn that lead into a steep and narrow drop down and across a bridge. Immediately after the bridge was a short steep uphill then a hard left. I was going so fast through the drop and across the bridge I was actually hard on the brakes going UP the hill to keep from missing the turn! First time I've even locked up my rear tire going uphill...
The Dirty Spokes crew did an awesome job running the event, like they always do. Everything started on time and ran smooth. They're the same ones doing the timing for the Bakers Dozen this fall.
The only pic I took, my pit, after I decided I was done:
