I road-tripped to Williamsburg Va this weekend to ride a century to benefit my brother's volunteer fire department on Saturday. On this trip, I also had the opportunity to ride with the Eastern Virginia Moutain Bike Assocation (EVMA) on Sunday, Aug 1 in Williamsburg, VA. These guys are a great bunch! They made me feel right at home!
I spent some time talking to their president Kurt (can't remember his last name, will have to get it from my brother) while riding. They seem to face some of the same issues (ride arounds, overuse of wet trails, the 'I just ride' attitude, etc). They do seem to have very good relations with their land managers, thoug. Kurt told me that if they feel a trail is being damaged by overuse, they call the land managers and can have the trail temporarily closed!
Trail conditions were, unfortunately, sub-optimal as a result of overuse of their primary trail after rains, so they have some significant maintanence issues...in short it was basically a mud-hole. They were very apologetic about the trail conditions, though!
On the same trip, I had the opportunity to ride Owl's Roost in Greesnboro, NC, maintained by the Greensboro Fat Tire Society. This is one hell of a trail! Very technical (and fast). Portions of this trail were on the damp side so my already slow speed was even slower .
My only complaints were that the trail was hard to find and their west-coast style stunt was slicker than goose-poop and resulted in a really nasty flying-zambini over the handlebars! (Only things bruised were a shin and my pride).
Overall, though, if you get a chance to ride Owl's Roost, do so! I know it will be a permanent fixture on my future trips to see my family!
If you are road-tripping and plan to go through Greensboro, let me know and I can give you pointers on finding the trail-head.
Ok, 'nuff rambling for tonight...
