USFS wants to keep the 4 south loops closed until they can assess potential hazard trees near the trails. Angela talked to them this morning.

according to the map at the trailhead, only half of great wall is closed (burnt). I didnt ride down it to see how far though- I think basically where that fireroad is where they stopped the burn

Well, I never received a definitive answer but whoever glen is I hope he is on this forum. Please good sir do not issue me a citation when I am clearly not doing anything wrong. No one appreciates their license plate number jotted down in an official USFS ticket book along with a snarky comment when clearly no rules were broken. Conflicting information maybe, but I was informed that Deep Step was opened so I drove to the south trailhead this AM and rode it along with the connector to big rock. When I arrived back there was new tape across the entrance to the trails and a citation on my car. I always check the website and am very careful to not ride the trail in any condition that would cause damage. So Maybe the website was wrong, along with the flyers that were highlighted at the trail?? I do not like being reprimanded when I’ve followed instructions. Being presumptuous as glen probably was, I do not appreciate it, Use your discretion and think “maybe the kid is riding the northern trails yet parked his car here” and then go on about your day, but please don’t write me a citation. To some I’m sure this isn’t a huge deal but it makes me feel as if I’ve had poor judgment, and I don’t like that. If this is falling upon deaf ears at least I was able to vent….

Hi Apollo - Glen K. is our USFS trails specialist and honestly great friend. I think there might have been lack of clear direction here on our part. Bill V indicated Deep Step was open but no one said don't park at the South trailhead. When sections are closed the USFS has no way of knowing where on those loops a rider might be if they are parked in the South parking lot.............that is a lot of territory to cover. We on the forum are at fault for not clearly stating that Deep Step is open but don't park in the South parking lot or risk being ticketed. I'll forward a note on to Glen - trust me he is a great guy and very good to work with!

The USFS map at the South trailhead clearly showed the access to Deepstep from the parking area as open. I swung by there today.

So we can park at the south trailhead and ride deep step? Why did you ask this question?

^ for clarification seenvic, I didn’t particularly want to park at the north trail head seeing as my car isn’t as suited to that gravel road and parking lot. And thank-you Angela for being understanding and patient with me. I'm sure Glen is a good guy and he probably plays a big role in Sumter NF, namely our beloved FATS, and that earns my respect. It just frustrated me, but now I know what steps to take to avoid the confusion.

Why did you ask this question? Maybe because it wasn't made clear and he was trying to confirm prior to parking just in case there was going to be an issue......... It was a good question, just too bad that no one saw it in time to give some direction.

Why didn't you park along Deep Step Rd like hunters do? I hate it for you that you got a ticket. If I thought I could help you with Glen, I would in a second. I tried that years ago with a friend and a sticky issue on the LCHT....didnt work out to anyone liking. I am sincere when I say I am sorry this happened to you. I may not be as quick to blame "circumstance" as Angela, but I wish this had not happened to you.

I got a ticket at Lick Forks a ways back. Truck was parked at the Kioski and blocked the view of the "pay here"
