Just wow, that was awesome.
I ended up showing up and wasn't really sure how far I planned to go.
The ride: I wasn't sure who was up ahead, but I entered the woods behind about 5 people I had no business being behind. Once that got sorted out, a group of 6 of us pretty much made our way to the first stop pretty quickly. Good stuff at all the rest stops....bananas, pbj, m&m's, cookies, other fruits.....and nice friendly faces manning the stations. Thanks to all who helped.
Left there and our group of 6 rode on to #2. I left 2 20 seconds ahead of the group, and had some personal business to tend to. I saw the group and a few others ride by. I got back on and rode hard. I passed 2 others, and one of the group of 6. Figured the other 4 were up ahead. I rode hard and kept looking for them. Figured I may see them at the next stop. I climbed Boulder Creek and looked down from where I had just come and there was Ted. I waited for him and he was as surprised as me that I was in front of him. They had taken a detour to start Keg and I went straight across the street.
Back at the WW rest stop, we all regrouped. We rode to Pburg and then to the end in a slower pace. I finished up with Ted in a little more than 5 hours out. I figure it was close enough to 50 miles to call it 50 miles.
The event was awesome. I got there fairly late, I suppose. Not too many cars were parked behind me. I got my stuff, some breakfast which was quality (Sonic egg/cheese burito) and was off. Marco lent me a pair of gloves as I forgot mine.
After the ride, Ted and I rolled up to some quality BBQ from Mots. I think Mots is the best Q in Augusta, so I was quite pleased with the selection.
Overall, The Best Dam Ride was a fine affair. I'll be back in the future. Thanks to Phil Cohen, his staff at Chain Reaction and all the volunteers who made it such a great day.
