I'd like to get recommendations of places to get away for a long weekend within a short drive of Augusta (less than 4 hours). Ive lived in Augusta my whole life and never visited any of the mountain regions in the Southeast. I'd like to be able to stay in a cabin (suggested rental companies??) near areas that I can ride/hike/explore/sightsee during the day and relax with a nice dinner in the evening. Where around here do you guys like to go that you would suggest. Thanks in advance.

Pisgah. Beautiful rugged mtns. Plenty of hiking available. Blue Ridge Parkway is a great scenic drive. Asheville and Brevard nearby with lots of great places to eat.
Some others on here can probably recommend a place to rent a cabin...I think mhanna and nitro have done that a few times.

I have stayed all around the Pisgah area (Brevard, Asheville, Waynesville, etc) in accommodations from primitive campgrounds to high-end 'cabins' with hot-tubs, so I could probably recommend something based on your budget.
What kind of riding are you looking to do and how much are you looking to spend? The riding around Pisgah can be VERY different than what we have around here.

Nitro: We would like to stay in a small cabin with hot tub in the $125/nt range. Unfortunately BF doesnt ride so that is not going to be the main attraction on this trip but we will be taking the bikes in case I can convince him to ride something with limited climbing (suggestions). More hiking and outdoor/nature sightseeing type stuff during the day (waterfalls, historic sites, etc.) and nice dining at night. Thanks again everybody!!

I have had great success with the site vrbo.com in finding accommodations. Watch for things like extra fees, minimum stays, etc. They generally will have plenty of pictures so you can "see" the property before you go. This is a great time to go for the next couple of months because the rates are really good. Up in the north Georgia mountains there are a ton of options (like Ellijay, etc) you have to look a little harder around the Brevard area and if you are trying to locate near a particular feature or town, be sure and ask how close it is before you make reservations. I'm sure there are many other good ones, just been using this one successfully for years.

If you stay near Asheville and want a good (but expensive) dinner I'd recommend the Red Stag Grill, in the Grand Bohemian hotel in the Biltmore Village. I've been there once and it was GREAT. Pricey places like that usually don't seem worth the $$ to me, but Red Stag did. I had the bison tenderloin and my wife had the sea bass (not on the menu anymore...maybe it was the special that day or something), both were great. Visiting the Biltmore house is something that could easily take up a whole day, but it's not outdoors. Good rainy day option though.

This one is in Cedar Mountain, NC which is on the main road to Dupont State Forest (four great waterfalls) we have stayed here before and looks to be in your price range. You can literally ride from the cabin down to the trailhead - it is very close to the waterfalls sections of Dupont. This one has three bedrooms and the upstairs bedroom is bunkbeds so actually could easily house 4 people+ if needed. Just to give you an idea.....http://www.vrbo.com/174457

We went up to Helen, GA a few weeks ago and used www.bluecreekcabins.com/We will use them again and my wife is very very picky on comfort and price. Their main area has a stocked trout pond for guests and the cabin we rented had an outside hot tub, sauna and jacuzzi inside.

For the type of riding you want to do, I definitely recommend Dupont. There are some really beautiful waterfalls there that you can hike to, also. If you decide to go there, call me or email me and I can help you plan a route to ride your bikes. We have ridden Dupont many times. Once you learn the trails, you don't have to stop at every intersection and pull out your map! It is a great place to ride! It has a wide variety of trails from easy riding to some pretty darn steep trails. It is a beautiful place!

Thanks everybody for the suggestions. I think we are sold on the Asheville area. Looks just like what I had in mind...and I agree Humbug on the BF! Although Brian the link you sent to those cabins in Helen made it a tough choice..those are spectacular!! Dustin your restaurant suggestion looks great and has lots of unique menu items. Thanks!
Angela: I've used VRBO before too and love it. There are just so many to choose from. Trying to wade through them all and find the one that suits us best. Im so indecisive...it could take a while. Thanks.
Barbara: I think I will hit you up about planning something around Dupont. Since you and Angela both suggested it, I will take ya'lls advice.

Since this is your first visit, and your BF is not a big-time biker, my suggestion is to leave the bikes at home. There is so much good hiking and sight-seeing, I don't think it would be worth your time to get to good mountain biking areas. Dupont is a cool place, but just 45 minutes north of there, the mountain views and hiking is much better. Also, I like Helen and the GA mountains plenty, but the NC mountains and Blue Ridge Parkway are WAY better. Spend as much time exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway as possible. There are amazing overlooks and easily accessible hikes everywhere. Asheville sounds like a good base for what you want. If you would consider something more remote, my wife and I have stayed in Little Switzerland several times and love it. This place www.switzerlandinn.com has rooms and A-Frame cottages in your price range, and a nice restaurant on site. The views are amazing and you are directly on the parkway. You definitely feel like you are in a mountain town. It takes about 4 hours to get there.
