Hey guys, Eric from Asheville here. I was wearing my Long Cane Massacre shirt the other day and a friend told me he was there also. He told me with great confidence that he knew he had ridden more miles than me that weekend. Little did he know that I was one of the guys that rode an extra 44 miles, starting at 11:30p.m., to the race start from our broken down car.
THAT WAS YOU? was his suprised reply. Apparently I met my friend years before getting to know him and his wife.
Well, besides meeting cool people the Long Cane opened my mind to the idea of rediculously long rides. I soon moved to Asheville since the idea of a rediculously long ride in Charlotte would involve many many laps at the park and it doesn't stink in like burning brake pads in Asheville. Anyway, once in A'ville I started doing 6-9 hour rides and even a few overnighters with 6-9 hour rides each day and 25 pounds of gear on my back. Eventually I was getting bored because no-one wanted to go on a death march with me. These people had not seen the light. So, what's the best way to get people to do something like 60 miles of Pisgah singletrack? CHALLENGE THEM.
Born from the enlightenment of the Long Cane, I organized the Pisgah Death March a.k.a. Pisgah MTB Adventure. The first race had 17 racers, the second had 32 racers and the third had 56 racers! HA!HA!HA! The plan is working! More people to do epic rides with!
Well, I just wanted to drop you guys a line to say thanks. Without the Long Cane Massacre there would be no Pisgah Death March. Who knows, I might still be in Charlotte content with a couple laps out at the park.
I hope the Massacre makes a comeback!
Eric
