Downhill mountain bike races through cities is quite popular in South American countries, especially Brazil. They attract thousands upon thousands of spectators and each is treated like a national holiday. I have observed a couple of them and the crashes those guys survive are unbelievable (thank goodness for full-coverage helmets and body armor). A web search will turn up videos of other DH races held there.

This was sent to me a few days ago and the thing that amazed me (other than the guys skill to make it down the course in one piece) was that people actually stayed out of his line of fire....seems like that might be the challenging thing if someone tried to do that here!

Funniest part of the videos are the dogs and especially the chicken getting out of the way. Mountain biking is a huge deal in some of the South and Central American countries, much bigger than road biking. This particular 4-day cross-country race is world-renowned for its difficulty. singletrack.competitor.com/2010/10/news/new-stage-for-2010-la-ruta-de-los-conquistadores_10866Click on the video available on the below site and one scene shows riders carrying their bikes over an abandoned railroad trestle which crosses a crocodile-infested river. Through the years it has become the most photographed landmark of the entire race course. Some stages are on the road, others through the boonies. larutadelosconquistadores.com/info/#axzz1FfNPjGpt

At least one of our local riders participated in this ride and to be honest his account of crossing that railroad tressle, the crazed monkey throwing rocks, the brutal climbs and crazy killer downhills, the take-em-down digestive system bacterial episode, and on and on were such a testimony to what people are willing to endure to finish a race..............unbelievable!

I don't understand how every bolt on the bike doesn't just fall out or shear off after something like that. My poor Giant would be in pieces!!!

Well I didn't even mention the part towards the end of the ride where they were riding in salt water that was well over their bottom brackets - in other words you wouldn't take your best bike to a ride like that!
