Hope he's alright.
This is why I ride a mountain bike instead of a road bike....especially here in Augusta, seems like everyone hauls a** ALL the time. And when it rains, look out! I haven't been here very long, but I've already seen 3 people who have spun out on freeway on/off ramps when the roads were wet.
Also, it seems like everyone sucks at merging; People coming from bobby jones onto I20 try and merge doing only 30mph...of course that doesn't matter now that I20 gets shut down to one lane most of the time, so now everyone goes 30 or under.
I'm done ranting now.

Rant on! A bit of ranting (though here, it's preaching to the choir) is fine... Hopefully, this rider heals fast and completely! I ride about 2-3K road miles each year. Through shear luck and being picky about where I ride, I've been fortunate to not end up like this rider.

We try to do a couple of centuries a year and like the "safety in masses" appeal. The centuries we attend are well received by areas they are routed through and the cars are respectful of the event and are generally courteous and careful. We tend to only road ride when it is too wet to mountain bike or in preparing for those centuries but I do like the fact that I suspect I'll never see a WalMart 18 wheeler bearing down on me while I am riding down a trail!
