Another fun night down at the canal! The course was FAST tonight thanks to a few guys doing some work, trimming and working on some of the sandy spots. A lot of folks (myself included) were able to get a personal best time tonight thanks to that work. Thanks fellas!!

I voted for the Creampuff Connector. I like linking trails together via pavel...feels...bigger, like you're covering more distance, more of an adventure. Besides, the Creampuff Connector has the Terriers of Terror and a lot less feces.

Post links to the pics, not the pics themselves, that way if someeone doesn't want to see them, they don't have to.

Here's another vote for FATS. I rarely ride Bartram by itself, it's fun, but it's not really challenging and it's pedal pedal pedal the whole time. FATS isn't that challenging either, but at least there's some fast downhills.

+1 for Christmas Party ride. Not as much singletrack, but a lot more climbing and technical riding. Turkey and Wine aren't all that memorable to me.
I'd like to suggest we change the game a bit, and require a ride to get 10 votes to win instead of 5.

One of the local guys reminded everyone of the trail etiquette when sharing with horses and seemed quite adamant about it, so I just assumed there was a lot of mutual respect going on between the two groups. There is. That one guy was the only one unfriendly, everyone I spoke to was super nice. Last time I rode out there (with seenvic actually) we stopped and chatted with a group of riders and one lady commented how wonderful the trail was, and the fact that we can all share and enjoy it together.

+1 for Modoc. Toughish climbs, technical riding, scenery, creeks crossings, rocks, logs...what's not to love?

Sorry I wasn't able to make the ETTR, looks like a good time was had by all. But, after seenvic told me how great the trail conditions were I headed up there yesterday with a friend from Atlanta. He had some mechanical issues so we cut the ride a little short, but still ended up with a little over 23 miles for the day. Had my first experience with someone who apparently doesn't like sharing the trail. When we got to Fell I couldn't remember where the trail was, so I asked a group of equestrians in the camp. The first guy I asked said he wasn't sure, but he pointed towards a big ol' boy and said "that guy will know for sure though." This is how the conversation went: ME: Excuse me, do you know where the trail starts? HIM: I don't know nothin' about no bicycle riding - I don't ride bicycles. ME: .....right, but we all use the same trail, it's a multi-use trail. HIM: I don't know nothin' about no bicycle riding. ME: I see. Enjoy your ride. The next people I asked (also equestrians) were very friendly and helpful, they pointed me in the right direction. We had a great ride, love the 'big flow' section between C/G.

I've been using Squirt wax based lube and really really like it. Stays on decently long, super easy to clean - just brush the chain with an old toothbrush or something similar. Then put more lube on. Easy easy.

Good turn out tonight! 26 racers braved the heat and sand and threw down on the canal trail. The sandy spots did claim a few riders tho - there was several crashes and mechanicals - but nothing major.
Also, we had 7 folks sign up as new SORBA members!
On to the results!
EDIT: Well....we made a mistake on the math for Bryce's time - he should have been in 2nd place in the beginner class, not 4th. The corrected finish times are below. Sorry you didn't get to stand on the podium Bryce. You'll just have to go fast again next week!
IF THERE ARE ANY OTHER ERRORS BELOW PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!
WOMEN 1 - Alyssa Andre - 14:30 2 - Caroline Smith - 25:24
BEGINNER 1 - Andrew Smock - 13:07 2 - Bryce Payne - 13:38 3 - Darin Bowe - 14:00 4 - Frank Chandler - 14:20 5 - John Pilcher - 15:37 6 - Martin Schneider - 15:46 7 - Devin Manger - 15:52 8 - Gustavo Barden - 19:28
SPORT 1 - Walter Reck - 12:04 2 - Josh Bennet - 12:30 3 - David Finlay - 12:33 4 - Matt Cawthon - 12:51 5 - Nick Vrettos - 12:53 6 - Mike Dunn - 13:32 7 - Ross Cain - 13:53 8 - Lowell Dorn - 14:16
EXPERT - Includes Razor's Edge 1 - John Phelan - 11:52 2 - Josh Jackson - 12:00 3 - Trent "I'm not ready for Expert" Snyder - 12:37 4 - Ross Douglas - 13:08 5 - Jeffrey Lott - 13:50 6 - Matt "flintstoning in with a broke chain" Kogel - 17:22 7 - Ben "how do you shift this thing??" Hyler - 18:00
Big thanks to Daniel and Angela Allen for being our course marshalls; John Pilcher for doing some last minute chainsawing, and Charlie Mock for representing the Bike Patrol.
Thanks to everyone who came out and raced, and we'll see you again next week!

just in case i'll be able to make it, where is the best place to park? Most folks will park at the pumping station parking lot at the end of the tow path (if you come in from downtown). Some folks will park up at the headgates and ride down. EDIT: I'll be getting there a little after 5 tonight. I'll ride a lap and finish marking the course (Drew did some last night) and make sure the trail is in race shape. Anyone's welcome to join me. Big thanks to jp3 also, word is he's spent a good bit of time down there lately getting the trail dialed.

Can we just ride in a few races, as in I have to work two out of the four weeks, so I won't be able to make it tomorrow. Oh and Bikerpanda, I think I will smoke your 20 minute beginner time with 25 minutes, LMAO. Yep, you can do as many or as few as you want. Try to do one race each direction tho, that way you'll have an Overall time (fastest cw + fastest ccw)

Just a reminder that the Canal Crown Time Trial series starts tomorrow night! Hope to see a big crowd there. There is a slight chance of rain in the forecast. Bring plenty of water tomorrow, it's gonna be hot. See you at the bottom of the stairs ;D EDIT: And please be on time and bring correct change!! $5 for IMBA-SORBA members $8 for non-IMBA-SORBA members If you plan to join IMBA/SORBA (and race the series for free) bring either cash or a check made out to IMBA. Yeah, they call it 'base'. Not exactly beginners though. The winner in my class (19-29 age group) finished the 10.5 mile loop in 48mins - 13mph average speed. Pretty quick. Base did 1 lap, sport and SS did 2, expert and pro did 3. The winners in pretty much every class all averaged over 13mph....some just did it for longer.

Your other option is a plastic spoke protector... MD When I was sitting on the trail I would given anything to have had a pie plate on the bike! Pie plates (also known as “dork discs,” “nerd coasters,” “Minneapolis frisbees,” “45rpm singles,” “idiot pucks,” and “moron shingles”) are like heavily intoxicated people and many triathletes in that they have no business being on a bicycle.

I did my first XC race this morning at the Dauset trails in Jackson, GA. The CSRA had a good number of folks there. The Funk family was there, Nitro, Wala, Haby, and Jimmy B. I feel like I'm missing someone... The course was a 10.5 mile loop. Not much climbing, but rough, and very fast. Lots of roots and way more rocks than you'd expect in middle GA. Way rockier than any trail we have here locally. Not as bad as the Snake though. Since this was my first XC race I signed up for the XC3/base 19-29 class. There were 8 of us. It was full throttle from the start. I mean, hard as you can possibly go full throttle. 2 guys went down HARD on the 1/4mile gravel road sprint to the singletrack. I entered the single at the back of the pack in 6th place (never have been a sprinter). Eventually got past one guy, slowly started to reel in two others. Then my chain jumped the cassette and got stuck between the spokes and cassette when I tried shifting to the big cog. I had to stop. My class rode off, so did part of the class that started 2mins behind us, inlcuding Nitro. Finially got the chain out, and took off trying desperatly to catch back up, I was only back a few minutes. I caught Nitro and few other guys at a switchback where there is another crash. I stay on Nitros wheel for a ways, the pass him on a rocky climb when he's in the wrong gear and stalls. He catches me, gets on my wheel and we haul balls. We pass one guy, then catch a group of 4 guys. Then my chain gets stuck again when I shift to the big cog under power. It's really stuck this time, no matter what I do I can't get it out. I end up sitting down on the side of the trail for at least ten minutes trying to get it free. My race is over, a ton of people pass me. I almost just gave up and started walking, I was only 3 miles from the end. Eventually a volunteer/photographer comes down the hill and helps me get it out. I finish the ride at a more moderate pace. No reason in killing it at this point. I did almost get clotheslined tho when I take a left instead of a right. I think the race tape would have broke before it yanked me off the bike...hopefully. Before I was able to stop it had already slid up my arms, chest, and was under my chin. I was focusing on the trail tread, looking for the fastest line through the dip in the left hand turn, didn't notice the tape till the last second. Close call. I finish up, chat with Nitro and his family a bit, then run into Wala and talk to him for a while. Eventually I realize I forgot to hit stop on my stopwatch/HR monitor. Once I stop it the stats were interesting. An hour and nine minutes on the clock. My average heart rate was 181 and maxed out at 206. I might have been DFL, but it wasn't for lack of trying hahaha. I need to adjust my RD limit screw before I ride that bike again. And pull the cassette to check the spokes. XC racing is pretty fun. It's hard. And FAST. I don't typically go out and just hammer like that, I'm more of a settle into my own pace for several hours kind of guy. Only problem with XC races is they're short. I spent 5hrs in the car today for less than an hour ride. Not something I'll do often for sure.
