I'm looking for help. What do you use to clean all the dirt and grime off of the chain and gears? Also, what type of lube do you use. I have a wax-based dry lube and I have Finish Line degreaser. I want to make sure I have the right stuff before I start cleaning. Thanks for the help.

This is the tool I use: www.finishlineusa.com/products/chain-cleaner.htmworks great and is ~$25 at Academy Sports. Used the degreaser and lube that came with it until I ran out, then went to a local bike shop and bought what they recommended for lube/degreaser

I've been using Squirt wax based lube and really really like it. Stays on decently long, super easy to clean - just brush the chain with an old toothbrush or something similar. Then put more lube on. Easy easy.

Dustin, when you say "Stays on decently long, ", what does that mean? I just now ran out of my Finish Line Teflon Dry Lube I bought when I got the bike. (yea, yea, it is more of a reflection of my lack of riding than lack of lubing) With it, I just drip it on, and the grip the chain with a rag while spinning it to take off the crud. I have a kit that has a bath with brush for more thorough cleaning. It uses some kind of citrus based cleaner.

I get around 130 miles of dry riding, nastiness makes it flake off faster.
You don't have to wipe it off after you apply it, the excess will come off on its own. Sometimes I'll brush the chain off before adding a new coat, but not always. I add more whenever it starts squeaking.

I have better success of avoiding junk build-up if I let the lube dry for a day or so.

I have better success of avoiding junk build-up if I let the lube dry for a day or so. Yep, it's best to apply the lube AFTER a ride, then it has plenty of time to set up. If you put it on right before it'll attract more gunk and you'll fling it all over your frame, especially of you don't wipe off the excess with a liquid lube.

WD40 is NOT lube. Except for when it is. www.wd40bike.com/But, if you like your bike, don't "lube" it with regular old school WD40
