Mostly not wet but really wet where it's wet.
But I haven't been out there since Saturday when it was this way.
I came out of there looking like I had wrestled pigs cause I ride thru the mud and not around it.
FATS is no doubt the wettest trail in the area. Modoc and Turkey were great on Sunday. And they need wheels. FATS doesn't need wheels.

When I was last out there last Friday, Brown Wave, Deep Step and upper Skinny were OK. Skipped lower Skinny when several out there said it was bad. Had I known how bad Great Wall was, I would not have ridden it. I also looked like Bill Victor when I came out.
To put my 2 cents in, I would be a fan of closing individual trails when they should not be ridden. The conditions made the trails not near as fun to ride as they were when I was up there at Thanksgiving. But still it was a nice "last ride" since I am now off the bike for several weeks after surgery yesterday that went very well.

Tower trail in really good shape late wednesday. Hardly any mud at all. A few trees down.

I finally made it to FATS yesterday to take some soil samples (and of course get a few grins in). I rode Skinny and Brown Wave because I figured they were some of the more heavily ridden trails. There were a few small wet spots on skinny and about 3 or 4 real big wet spots on Brown Wave right out the get go (going CCW) but the rest looked alright. I saw where there were bricks brought in but i wouldn't know where to begin with them. To avoid being the biggest tool messing up the trails i just carried the bike over these awful sections.

About 25 years ago I had a calendar that had a clever saying on it. I've never forgotten it. It said "Never wrestle with a pig...you both get all dirty and the pig likes it!" Who knew it'd take 25 years to finally get to share that with others? Words to live by!

Jan 1, 2009 is the plan.
Crew is out working daily and they are in it and making the call.
I pushed hard for today, but was rebuffed by the people in the trenches saying it could use one more day.

Just wondering if FATS re-opened today and if so did anybody ride it? If so how was it? I'm hoping to get out there tomorrow morning before the forcasted afternoon rains.
Happy New Year to all!

Rode Great Wall today still some wet spots. Nothing really bad as long as you stay on the bricks. One non rider tree down about halfway.

Upper Skinny and Brown Wave were great today.
Alot of quality work on the problem areas. I think Deep Step and Skinny have been completely covered as far as drains being cleaned. Alot of the Brown Wave has been done. A little of the Great Wall.
Deep Step is the loop I worry about the most. It has something, perhaps soil type issues that make it stay wet the longest.

Rode Tower (x2) and Big Rock today. Pretty good shape with just a few spots that you leave a track but you will not sink the wheel. Was supriced at how good they were compared to what I saw on the older loops just before Christmas.

The weather forcasted a cloudy but dry day today as I prepared to head out to FATS with highs around 63. Well that news coupled with a few folks saying FATS was okay except for a few places on Deep Step, Great Wall, and Tower was a green light for me to head to the trail. The weather folks were a little off and the overnight light rain made for a few more wet spots than I expected.
I rode Skinny out to Brown Wave and it wasn't in too bad shape. You could see where we had cleared some drains and armoured some of the more wet places. The Brown Wave was very muddy. So much so that I turned left at the Forest Service road and rode that back to the parking lot. The rain started around 2:30 or so and by the time I got back to the parking lot, the orange tape was back across the opening to the trails and the "CLOSED" sign was reposted. Many thanks to the person(s) who closed it down. It needs it just as bad as we need some dry weather for a few weeks.
A couple of interesting notes:
You really get an appreciation for the change in elevation when you ride the service road back to the parking lot from down at the lower Brown Wave crossing. My gosh I climbed my legs off! I never noticed that when driving on that road in the past.
Stop by and check out the Grafton Family Cemetary marker just before you get to that first tee intersection on the service road just past the parking lot. That's the road with lots of climbing if you come at it from the other direction. The marker is on the left going the direction I went. There are some dates on there in the 1700s and 1800s. Cool.
Since it was cloudy, I rode sans sunglasses. That gave me the opportunity to catch a mud clod with each of my eyes during my brief time on the Brown Wave. Memo for Record...never ever ride in muddy conditions again and never ride without eye protection. I've got to get some of those clear lens sports glasses for cloudy days.
Okay the laundry is done and the bike is wiped down and clean again. Now if I could just get this boulder out of my eye.

I almost forgot. I found a sign laying on the ground in the FATS parking lot. It says "STAY ON THE TRAIL OR STAY HOME". I don't know who it belongs to, but if no one contacts me to claim it within a few days, I'll clean it up and repost it near the trail head for all to see.
