Hey, at least this time it wasn't a two-legged humanoid on wheels.
Good to hear from you. Come back down and ride with us sometime.

I can't believe the number of people on Long Cane and FATS last week not wearing Orange....especially with the number of guns going off nearby.....

Not wearing orange is dumb enough.
Wearing white is putting a target on your back.
Bill - when I saw you last in the FATS parking lot, 2 people took off both in white. One with a white long sleeve t-shirt and the other in a full white body suit. I was amazed at the stupidity I was witnessing.

Last Wednesday my son went to FATS for the first time alone. My first thought was about the hunters and I made my son promise me that he first had to go buy a orange vest. I gave him a $20 bill and he got two $4 vest from Walmart. I also ask him to try to find someone else to ride with at FATS, he did and shared his other vest because they did not have one.

I can't believe the number of people on Long Cane and FATS last week not wearing Orange....especially with the number of guns going off nearby..... Long Cane is about 7 1/2 miles from my house so i ride out there between 2-3 times a week after class when the weather is kind. You would not believe the hunters out there. My roommate and I both hunt a little (on private land where there are no trails) so we both are pretty used to the sound of gunfire, and he swears to me someone fired within 100 yards of where he was. Also, Derek from Performance Cycle in Greenwood told me once that he has heard shotgun pellets zipping through the trees above his head. I have also heard from other people that have even ran across skinned dear right on the trail that they had to bury. Wearing orange is necessary at FATS, but at Long Cane riding without orange is about the same as running through the woods in all brown.

I have property that borders that area. I don't even go onto my own property without orange on, even on Sundays when deer hunting's not allowed. Way to many people in the woods with guns to take any chances.

How frightening. I'm new to the world of mountain biking but I've been riding horses for 20 years and am no stranger to being cautious around hunters. Even in the off season I once rode my horse up on several small poached deer carcasses. They killed them then cut what little bit of antlers they had off and left the bodies to decompose. That's one real plus to a bike. They don't spook at blood.

This is just a heads up for anyone who thinks that hunters aren't out there: Great Wall, counterclockwise, at the end of the first section before getting to the power lines, there is a deer stand 20 yards in facing away from the trail. Be careful as this particular hunter enters from the gravel road, walks down the power lines to his stand. Anyone seen any more?

Haven't been on the lower four loops in six weeks, at least. However, the last time I rode GW/Skinny/BW I saw three pickups parked on the gravel roads in areas very close to the trails. Didn't see any hunters, but you absolutely MUST assume they are there.
We rode HC Saturday and saw a pickup parked near the road. Looked out in the tree-line and saw a nice orange hat at a distance of at least 200 yards. Amazing how visible true hunter orange is!
Yes, I am sure he could see us. We were sporting our vests...
