Never really done any night riding, But I would like to get into it... What is good light for a reasonable amount of $$$ ? ($60-$80) Bar or Helmet mount? I know so of the older lights get very hot, have the ultra bright LED's solved that issue? Is such a light posted below decent enough to hit the local trails at night? no crazy racing speeds... just casual riding... www.jensonusa.com/store/product/LS296A20-Cateye+El530+Led+Headlight.aspx

Check out the NiteRider Minewt Mini USB. At $99 it's hard to beat.

Helmet mount on the trail. Bar mount on the road.

Helmet mount is better than bar mount if you can only have one.

I've actually done alot of night riding. But almost none since LED's came onto the scene. I got an old HID that I need a new bulb for, and that bulb cost $100.
What is the deal with these LED's? Are they bright like an HID? In between HID's and whatever HID's replaced? Or less bright than the old school lights before HID came out.

Is heat much of problem with HID's? I've heard stories of people sitting around talking, and their lights melting... they rely on the wind while riding to keep them cool...

I have a ~2yr old NiteRider HID light. It's awesome as far as light output goes. It does get warm, and it has a warning that it should only be turned on when moving. I usually turn it off if I'm going to be stopped for more than a minute or two. Besides, it's so bright it'll blind anyone you might try and talk to.

I just bought a Light & Motion Seca 400 a month ago from Performancebike to replace my Niterider Halogen because it had become unreliable. I use it every morning for my 30 mile road ride from 4:50 to 6:30 AM here in Jacksonville, Florida and think it is the best thing I have ever used. Well worth the $$$. I will be camping at Hickory Knob State Park from 11/22 to 11/30/2008 and cannot wait to try it out on FATS, Hickory Knob, etc. It mounts helmet or handlebar.
