Having ridden FATS and been very dissappointed with the overall smoothness of the trails, has there been any discussion about paving the loops? Maybe not all of them, but 3 of 4 would be nice. That would leave 1 unpaved for the hardcore full suspension rockers. Also it would be nice to have some sort of tow rope available on some of the hills. Happy Trails - Sngletrksuperstar

This is a mountain biking trail. Paving it would be pretty ridiculous.

This first post is sarcasm right? My reply above was.
If not sarcasm, I don't know what to make of it. Niavety (sp?) would be my next guess. I can't imagine it (paving a trail in the Sumter NF) being a serious topic for discussion.

I personally can't believe we haven't paved the entire trail. I think a good 4" layer of concrete would do us all proud. After we do that, I propose cutting ALL the trees within 200' of the trail, so we won't have to worry about any potential non-riders. Once that is complete, we need to fence the entire trail system. There was a SNAKE on the trail yesterday. Horrors. I also saw two deer and numerous squirrels. Those really make riding dangerous. Whatcha think?

Nice EC494...You must be one of those hardcore punk rockers who bully people of the trails. You don't know me. Your mom did not love you enough when you were a kid. All I want is to make it fun for everyone. I believe that paving the trails would help in the overall satisfaction of riding. By the EC494, the village called, they want their idiot back.

You'll have a better shot at trying to get the Augusta Canal Towpath paved. Although I don't think it should be paved, some in the cycling community do think it should be paved. I can't believe you are serious about paving a trail in the forest. I thought at first you were so "hardcore" that you were using sarcasm to make the point that the FATS is pretty smooth now. But I couldn't reconsile the "towrope" comment as that implied you thought the trails had big climbs. For the record, I think they are relatively smooth and the climbs are right on for a trail that never gets above 550' in elevation. I wish the climbs were longer and in places, steeper. But you can only do so much w/ the land you are on. Brother, I know folks that ride FATS with a fully rigid singlespeed. No suspension at all, one gear. I see no need for a F/S bike at FATS, but do ride it w/ a suspension fork. The above doesn't make me a punk rocker. Actually I am a 40ish year old accountant! Your concept of trail riding has it's place. But it is not in a national forest, IMHO. I am trying to be respectful here, and respectfully ask you to go ride the North Augusta Greenway. As it fits your needs a little better than a natural surface trail. Perhaps a trip to the Bartram Trail up at the lake would give you a positive experience of riding on the dirt.

Gotta agree with you on the f/s comment Bill. Full suspension is not needed on FATS. We rode DuPont this weekend and I felt the exact same thing.
Maybe I need a good hardtail, eh? With that said, I was over at Chain Reaction yesterday and was checking out a new 29er hardtail. Reba front fork. Sweet! Hmmmm...Christmas is not too far away!
