ORAMM is a monster!
Congrats to Jimmy B for finishing.
I called it at rest stop 5 and headed in on the 5-6 miles of pavement. 56ish miles is a long way to ride and get a DNF!
Cramps got me. Set in about mile 30ish, in the midst of the big climb.....a 9 miler from mile 26 to mile 35. Lots of walking, riding, walking to Rest 3. I shouldn't quit there. Planned to, but Jimmy talked me out of it. Amazing that 5 minutes of pain free breathing can wipe out the last 90 minutes of agony from your memory.
On to rest 4. More cramps, more climbing, more walking. Full suffering at this point. But I had myself convinced that if I made it to Rest 5, I could finish. I left rest 4, and actually had to push on a paved road as I cramping so bad. Then a 200 yard hike-a-bike up a STEEP mountain side. This led to a fully exposed, technical, rocky, rooty DH called Heartbreaker. I flipped my front fork travel up to 140MM and passed people left and right coming down this mountain. I was sure to finish.....
....then more cramps. While riding DH, very fast on a 6" wide trail that is really technical and on the side of a large mountain with a huge penalty for falling.....I got cramps from my toes to my hips. Stop the bike. Lay on the group and wiggle in pain. All the riders I passed, come back by me. Thankfully one or two gave me some enduralites. I must have swallowed 20 of those pills. Back on. Going fast DH again, passing a few that had just passed me. Cramps again. Back in the weeds. Pain. Reach for my GPS unit to get some data.....it's gone. $400 down the drain. Damn.
I get to rest 5. 51 miles ridden and 12 miles to go. 1500' feet of climbing (that about how much 3 laps of Deep Step is). Serious death defying DH to go as well. I hate to say it, but I packed it in. Headed to the car via the paved roads.
56 miles ridden and my first DNF in ORAMM.
Gotta train next year. Not just ride. Gotta drink more the days before the event. More e-caps sooner.
Again, congrats to Jimmy B for finishing his first ORAMM.
