I'm sad to say goodbye to an old friend. I didn't know Bruce Norris all that well. We did two rides together. I don't really recall the second one, but I know it happened.
But the first one changed my (riding) life.
We met on a gravel road (USFS 515, I think) and did a 30ish mile ride of all gravel/pavement with only a short piece of the Turkey Creek Trail in there. It was a wet winter and we didn't need to be on the trails.
On that ride, we discussed riding the length of the entire Long Cane District with as little pavement as possible. A few months later I had done it w/ a friend from Aiken. When I called Bruce to tell him, he had done it also. My route was 130ish miles over 3 days using the LCHT, Baker Creek, Wine Creek, Turkey Creek, Modoc, the old Tower Trail and ended at my old house in North Augusta. Bruce's route was 80 miles and used no trails at all, just gravel and pavement.
The ride I did became the route for the first Long Cane Massacre Ride back in 1999.
When I told Bruce we had found the old Long Cane Massacre site, he told me those were his ancestors buried there. The grave does say "Norris" on it.
Bruce was one the first people to ride a bike on any trails around here. He put a big idea in my head and I am damn glad I met him and followed up the idea w/ action.
Thanks Bruce. I'll never "go big" and not think of you while doing it.

I got the sad news today from his wife. I remember in the early nineties meeting him and others at the Home Quarters parking lot to ride lick fork etc. Most memorable were the night rides we would do together and tinkering with our Nite Sun light systems to get more power! One of the first TRUE mtbers of the CSRA. Thanks for the good times!

I remember the first time I met Bruce, Andy Jordan hooked us up, spring 1990, we road lick fork "backwards". As we sat on the tailgate of my truck taking a cool pull from our water bottle, little did not know I had met the best riding partner anyone could ask for and a great friend. we rode a solid 6/7 years together, man the stories and memories I have. One of the best was I hit a spider at top speed on Modoc, got off the trail hit a log flipped and rolled down the trail after it was over and I was ok he laughed and kept laughing saying "man, all I saw was Jimmy, bike, Jimmy bike, Jimmy, bike......", then he tells me" I'm glad nothings broke 'cause aint' no way I can drag your big ass out of here" that is a qoute I would hear more than once and a story I would not live down. We taught each other how to really ride a mountian bike. Bruce was a good friend and a great father and husband, I will miss him.
Ride in peace my brother, Jimmy Culpepper

Sounds like y'all lost a good one. Maybe a memorial ride is in order? Something stupid long?

Gonna have to do that. Will be pretty slow for you, but you're a good sport about that kind of thing.
